Sok is a 73-year-old retired farmer. She’s married with eight children and thirteen grandchildren. Sok lives with her husband and is supported by her children. She and her husband used to be farmers, but have stopped farming due to their age and health. When she is not caring for grandchildren, she enjoys reading books about the Buddha and listening to the monks pray on the radio.
Five years ago, Sok developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her blurry vision. She cannot see well in bright or low light and is afraid to go outside because she is worried she might fall.
When Sok learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for two and a half hours seeking treatment. On December 14th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure.
Sok shared, “I hope after surgery my eye will see better. I want to go outside to visit neighbors, visit the pagoda, and be able to cook for my family.”

Sok was a little reluctant to travel far from her village to have surgery but felt comfortable with the kindness and skill of the our medical partner’s (CSC) staff. After her procedure, she stayed one night in the hospital so that surgeons could be sure she was healing well before she went home. She will apply eye drops eight times daily to aid in healing and decrease the risk of infection. She feels her life will improve because she will be able to finally see clearly the faces of her many grandchildren, and looks forward to renewed independence.
Sok said: “I am so happy I made the trip to have my eye fixed. I was not able to read books or cook and clean for my family. I have good vision now, and I can take better care of myself. Thank you to the people who support Cambodians to have better lives.”
