This happy six-month-old girl is Sonia, who lives with her three sisters, brother, and parents in Guatemala. Our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq (WK), tells us that Sonia is acutely malnourished—meaning her diet doesn’t include all the nutrients she needs to grow and develop.
WK explains that Sonia doesn’t have much of an appetite because, “when children do not receive sufficient food supply, their stomachs shrink and they develop symptoms similar to anorexia.” Therefore, in order to survive and thrive she needs intensive nutritional treatment.
WK reports, “While her mother works, Sonia’s oldest sister cares for her. Her sister straps Sonia to her back, and carries her around while singing to her and picking flowers to sell. Sonia’s favorite toy is a ball of yarn that her mom also uses as material for weaving. A few days ago, Sonia began to crawl.
With $535 in funding Sonia will be put on a nutritional program that will ensure she receives the nutrients and calories she needs to develop healthily. Funding will also include educational materials for Sonia’s mother to give her the knowledge and skills she needs to make good decisions about Sonia’s diet. This treatment will restore Sonia’s health and also make it possible for her sister to return to school.
Sonia’s mother shares, “I am so happy you visited me today and told us about this program. I think it will really help my little Sonia, and give her the chance to develop better.”
