Reach is a five-year-old pre-schooler who lives in Kampong Speu with his parents and older brother. His mother works in a hair salon, and his dad is a security guard. At home, Reach loves watching YouTube and playing with toy cars.
In 2020, he accidentally pulled the boiling rice pot down and burned multiple areas on the left side of his body. He received initial treatment at a nearby pediatric hospital, including skin grafts and wound care. However, burn scar contractures have developed, tightening the skin around his burns, especially around his wrist and hand. The contractures make it difficult to hold objects and perform everyday tasks.
When his family learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, they traveled for two and a half hours seeking treatment. On June 15th, surgeons at CSC will perform a burn contracture release surgery to improve the function of his hand. Now, his family needs help to fund this $495 procedure.
His mother shared, “I hope Reach can use his hand like before and feel good about himself like before the accident.”

Reach underwent mobility-restoring burn surgery on his hand.
Reach and his parents traveled to Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC) where surgeons released tightness from his burn and applied skin grafts to cover the open wound. As soon as surgeons confirmed that the grafts were healing, he was allowed to go home to continue healing. He and his mother worked with the physiotherapy team to learn how to massage the skin and strengthen his hand. Reach will return for a check-up in a month or so. After he has healed, he will be able to perform daily activities, like playing with his friends and grasping objects. This will help his self-esteem, as he is determined to keep up with his older brother and his friends.
His parents said, “We were feeling so bad that his hand would never be normal after his burn, but now we have hope he will be like other boys his age. We are thankful that he was able to receive this treatment. He will no longer have problems with his hand and can go to school next year.”
