Saroun, a 21-year-old factory worker, lives in Cambodia with his four sisters and one brother. Saroun enjoys watching TV, reading magazines, and helping his mother do work around the house.
A serious moto accident last July caused a brachial plexus injury (BPI) of Saroun’s left arm. The brachial plexus is the network of nerves that sends signals from your spine to your shoulders, arms and hands. A brachial plexus injury occurs when these nerves are stretched, compressed, or in the most serious cases, ripped apart or torn away from the spinal cord.
Saroun and his mother traveled three hours to reach our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC). Surgeons at CSC will perform a BPI repair surgery, which will involve diverting a nerve from one destination and sewing it into the non-functioning nerve. It can take three-to-six months before full recovery of function is typically seen.
“I hope I can use my arm normally again after surgery,” Saroun shares. “I will go back to work when I am better.”

Saroun received life-changing tendon reparation surgery.
Saroun’s brachial plexis injury (BPI) repair surgery went very well. During the procedure, surgeons diverted a neighboring nerve and sewed it onto the non-functioning one. He will have two weeks of physiotherapy and a follow-up appointment in three months to check his healing process. Though it can take three to six months before full function can be restored, doctors are very hopeful that Saroun will have complete mobility of his left arm.
With the surgery done, Saroun is eager to return to a normal life with greater mobility. Both he and his family are very thankful to all those who helped him have this life-changing treatment.
