Hervens is a two-month-old from Haiti who was born with hydrocephalus, a condition in which fluid accumulates in his skull. As a result, his head swells and he often has flu-like symptoms. If untreated, doctors say his condition can be fatal.
Hervens’ mother is 22 years old. She lives with her aunt, since she lost her own mother at the age of 13. She is very worried about her son’s condition. “When my son’s head deforms I do not know what to do,” she says. “I do not feel well. I cannot even eat. People tell me that my child will die from this disease and I’m desperate to know if I am going to lose my baby.”
