“Two years ago Phin developed a cataract in each eye,” our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), reports on the 82-year-old man from Cambodia. “He can’t see clearly, do work by himself, or go outside.”
Due to his cataracts, Phin experiences blurred vision, irritation, and tearing. Cataracts occur when the eye lens becomes cloudy, and can worsen to the point of functional blindness. Fortunately, there is a common procedure to eliminate the risk of blindness and to restore one’s vision.
As a stay at home father and grandfather, Phin enjoys reading books and visiting the pagoda to listen to the monks pray. “I hope that my father can see better than he does now,” his daughter explains to CSC.
$225 will cover the cost of Phin’s cataract operation and a three day stay at the hospital. In treatment, Phin will receive a clear lens implant in each eye to replace his clouded lenses. In the end, Phin’s vision will be restored.
