Narom is a 60-year-old widow from Kampong Cham province. Since her husband passed away from cancer four years ago, Narom has been living in her local pagoda, where she helps cook and clean for the monks and students. She has two sons - one is a monk, and the other helps support the family by working at a local construction site. In her free time, Narom likes listening to the monk’s prayers and spending time with her children.
About three months ago, Narom developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, so it is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so is not able to go places on her own.
When Narom learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On December 1st, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Narom and her family are able to contribute towards the cost of her treatment, but need help raising $228 more to fund the surgery.
She says, “I hope I can see more clearly and go to places on my own again.”
