Dulce is a 2-month-old girl from Guatemala. She lives with her parents and older sister, and her father supports their family by farming. “Her parents say that she cries a lot because she is always hungry,” says our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq (WK), “and that they wish they could buy formula but they really cannot afford it.”
Dulce’s mother is having lactational failure, meaning she is unable to produce enough milk for Dulce. Because her family cannot afford to purchase formula, her parents have been feeding her water to supplement the lack of milk. “Dulce is sick often and her mother says that she barely weights more than she did when she was born,” explains WK.
Babies are reliant upon the nutrients in breast milk or formula for development. “What Dulce is currently receiving is far below what she needs to grow,” continues WK, “now Dulce is at risk of dehydration and starvation.”
For $1,016, Dulce will receive the formula she needs to grow and thrive and her mother will receive health education. “One-on-one education with Dulce’s mother will prepare her for when [Dulce] needs to start eating solid food, as well as help her watch for further signs of malnutrition and other illness,” explains WK.
WK expets that after the treatment, Dulce will have a strong immune system and will grow to be a healthy, energetic baby. “I want my daughter to stop getting sick and to start growing,” shares Dulce’s mother. “I am worried, because she is always sick,” she continues, “…thank you for wanting to help us, I hope you can save my baby.”

Dulce received treatment for malnutrition.
“When we first met Dulce her mother was suffering from lactation failure, and as a result Dulce was not receiving any breast milk—her mother could only afford to give her sugar water. As a result, Dulce’s immune system was not strong and she was getting frequent colds,” reports our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq. “Dulce is now doing much better. Since receiving baby formula, which contains the vitamins and nutrients that she needs, Dulce has grown significantly and is now at a healthy height and weight for her age.”
“Her immune system is now much stronger, and she has not had a cough or diarrhea since beginning treatment. Her parents have received nutrition education and we can see them applying what they are learning to Dulce’s eating schedule. We expect her to start eating solid food in several months, and we are preparing her parents to introduce healthy and varied foods into her diet,” continues Wuqu’ Kawoq.
Dulce’s mother says, “Thanks to the help that you are giving me, my child is growing very well. I’m happy that she is not getting sick and that she is receiving the formula very well. My husband and I were very worried because we did not have the resources to feed our baby what she needed. Thank you for helping us.”
