Bertha is a 41-year-old mother of five children, from a rural town just two hours outside of Arusha. She and her son were in the kitchen of their home when the gas bottle exploded, burning them both. Bertha has especially bad burns on her upper limbs, axillas (underarm), elbows, wrists, and hands. She was taken initially to the district hospital, but was unable to continue with the payments required there.
The burn scaring is particularly painful and she finds she cannot wear clothing on it. She is currently dependent on others for all her daily activities because she cannot use her arms.
$870 will cover the costs of the surgery and care Bertha needs. The surgery will release the contractures (skin tightening) that are causing Bertha’s discomfort and lack of mobility.
Bertha is looking forward to heal and be able to dress herself, cook for her children, and look after their home once again.
