Kim Ly is a 70-year-old retired rice farmer from Cambodia. She is married and has one son, two daughters, and five grandchildren. She lives with her husband and their youngest daughter, who works as a waitress in a local Chinese restaurant. She spends much of her time at home, where she helps care for her grandchildren or visits the local pagoda to join in the ceremonies. One year ago, Kim Ly developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her cloudy vision. She is unable to see well in the dark or in bright light and feels unhappy that she cannot be more independent. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so she is not able to go places on her own. When Kim Ly learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On November 18th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help raising $253 to fund her procedure and care. Kim Ly shared, "after surgery, I hope I can see better and visit the pagoda for ceremonies."

Muhumuza is a 46-year-old builder and father of four, living with his wife and children in Uganda. Because he wasn't formally trained, Muhumuza is usually assigned to the construction of local, semi-permanent houses. However, these jobs are difficult to come by, limiting his ability to earn a steady income. His wife grows food crops on a small scale, on the limited land that they have. Muhumuza went to the doctor because of a swelling just below his right shoulder. He experiences chest pain and paralysis around the site of the swelling. This has hindered his ability to work, as he feels pain whenever he lifts a heavy object. Muhumuza traveled to our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, to receive treatment. On February 10th, surgeons at Karoli Lwanga Hospital, Nyakibale, will remove the mass. Now, Muhumuza needs your help to raise $188 to fund this procedure. Muhumuza says: “I expect to get well after being given your support to undergo my surgery, and I hope to continue building in good health."

Mary is a grade two pupil from Kenya and the fifth child in her family. Her mother is a single parent raising six kids on her own while also taking in work washing clothes. A little while ago, Mary broke her dominant arm while playing with her classmates at school. She was rushed to a health facility nearby, where an x-ray revealed a right supracondylar fracture that needs surgical attention. Her right arm is currently in a sling and she is unable to use it or attend school. Mary's mother pooled her resources with close relatives to bring Mary to our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare. On March 15th, surgeons with African Mission Healthcare will perform a fracture repair procedure, called an open reduction and internal fixation. This procedure will help to join the bone and enable Mary to use her arm again. Now, Mary and her family need $979 to fund this procedure. Mary’s mother said, “Mary is unable to go to school because of the fracture. She uses this hand that is broken and needs treatment.”
