Chib is a 46-year-old monk who lives on the grounds of a pagoda in Kampot, Cambodia. In addition to teaching novice monks, he performs ceremonies during births, deaths, and weddings. Monks in Cambodia also play a role in ministering to the people’s social and emotional needs. He is unmarried and has a sister and parents who live nearby. They are farmers who grow rice and beans.
In 2020, Chib lost the lower half of his right leg due to an untreated infection. He was eventually fitted with a prosthesis, but he developed a knee flexion contracture, meaning he can no longer fully straighten or extend the knee. He is in pain and cannot wear his prosthesis.
A relative suggested he visit our medical partner Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC) for an investigation of options and treatment. On June 20th, surgeons at CSC will perform a surgery to improve the mobility and function in his leg. He is able to contribute $100 to the surgery and she needs only $487 to fully fund the procedure.
Chib said, “After surgery, I hope that my knee will be straight, I can wear the prosthesis, and walk easily again.”

Chib traveled for three and a half hours to have a procedure to correct the tightening and shortening around his knee joint. The skin contracture had restricted his movement and caused great discomfort. His knee joint will be immobilized initially to allow proper healing; this will include weight-bearing restrictions. Rehabilitation will play a vital role in recovering Chib’s mobility and preventing further contracture. In order to improve joint flexibility, strengthen muscles, and restore normal function, he will begin physical therapy exercises. When he has healed, he will be able to use his prosthesis again and hopes to resume his important role at the pagoda.
Chib said: “I am grateful to no longer have pain on my stump, I hope to wear the prosthesis and walk as well. Getting surgery at CSC was a good decision for me since they have a good team.”
