Lucy is a 63-year-old woman from Kenya. Four years ago, Lucy lost two of her sons in an accident. Being a single mother and having depended on them, this loss was extremely difficult for her. Lucy engages in small-scale farming. She largely depends on her siblings for financial support.
For the last nine months, Lucy has been experiencing postmenopausal bleeding and backache. She has visited several health facilities without consistent treatment. In October, during World Breast Cancer Awareness Month, our medical partner’s care center, Nazareth Hospital, conducted a free community screening and testing for cancer. Lucy availed of the screening and was diagnosed with uterine hypertrophy and needs to undergo a hysterectomy, a procedure in which surgeons will remove her uterus.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $657 to fund Lucy’s surgery. On December 5th, she will undergo gynecological surgery, and once recovered, Lucy will be able to resume her daily activities free of pain.
Lucy said, “I was very scared when the doctor said I would be done biopsy. I feared the possibility of cancer. I was very thankful to God when the doctor told me that the condition I have can be treated. I can’t wait to have it done so that I avoid the risk of cancer. I plead for help since I have no way of getting the hospital fee.”
