Meet Wandia, a new patient at Kijabe Hospital, one of our partner facilities in Kenya.
Wandia is a beautiful 9-month-old who is her parents’ firstborn. Her father is a laborer and her mother a housewife, and together they own a piece of land where they farm for subsistence.
Wandia was born with spina bifida, a mass on her back that could lead to kyphosis and scoliosis (an abnormally curved spine), and an inability to control her bowel and bladder. She is also at risk of developing life-threatening infections.
Wandia’s mother is worried about her first daughter and says, “My prayer and hope is that Wandia’s surgery will be successful and that she will be able to recover soon.” For $980, Wandia will receive surgery to close the neural tube in her spine, which will remove the mass on her back and allow her to live a healthy life!
