“I really hope to be well and be able to reach my dream of being a grocery supplier and be able to take care of my family,” says Wilkister, filled with hope. Meet Wilkister, a 34-year-old single mother of three from Kenya. Recently, Wilkister accidentally fell and fractured her tibia. She was admitted to a local hospital and a surgeon recommended an open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), a type of surgery used to fix broken bones. She is experiencing pain and difficulty walking and, if not treated, there is risk for malunion of the bone and obstruction of an artery by a blood clot or air bubble as the broken bone moves around. Wilkister has a small business selling groceries in her village but her income is not enough to sustain her three children and pay for her surgery. “We expect after surgery, the bones will unite. Wilkister will be able to walk again,” describe our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation. “She will be able to work and take care of her children.” With $1,125, Wilkister can receive the surgery that will allow her to walk again. “I hope Watsi will support me,” says Rahab, “so that I can get well and be able to care for my little children and to see them grow into adulthood.” Rahab is a 32-year-old mother of two living in poverty in Kenya. She has been diagnosed with cervical cancer and an ovarian cyst after seeking medical attention for severe abdominal pain. Rahab does laundry for neighbors while her husband sells secondhand items in the city, but even together they cannot afford any treatment for her condition. For just $790, we can help Rahab receive the life-saving treatment she needs, and greatly improve her and her family’s quality of life in the process. “We expect that after treatment, most of the cancer cells will be removed, halting the spread of cancer" says our medical partner at the African Mission Healthcare Foundation. "Rahab will be relieved from bleeding and pain caused by the ovarian cyst.”

Bright hails from Uganda. He was involved in a terrible road accident, leaving him with severe wounds, swelling and the inability to use his right arm and hand. The accident has put him out of his work as a truck driver, and as his family’s primary breadwinner, he needs a job to sustain himself and the people he loves. With an average salary of $3 a day, Bright can’t afford his extensive reconstructive surgeries. Further delay may cause him to lose his arm completely. Let’s work to raise $795 for his treatment. His head starting growing faster than the rest of body, and his young life was complicated even further when he developed a brain tumor. Now, Patrick cannot walk. He is also unable to feed properly and so is at risk of malnutrition. Patrick has braved several initial procedures like a champ, but now he needs our help to treat his condition once and for all. Patrick's doctors need to insert a shunt into his head to reduce its size and prepare for the full removal of his tumor. This procedure can save his life. In 1992, when Rose was only 3 years old, politically instigated riots broke out in the small village in Kenya where she and her family lived. With her parents and siblings all at home, their small house was set ablaze. Sadly, only Rose and her mother made it out alive. Rose incurred severe body burns. Good samaritans rushed her to a nearby hospital where she received emergency medical attention. However, she was unable to get any further surgical assistance due to a lack of finances. It’s been 21 years, and Rose’s body is still deformed due to scaring. Her burned skin is uncomfortable, causes pain, and will eventually lead to permanent disability. Surgery is her best chance at a normal life, but as an employee in a small shop, she can only afford $1000 of her catastrophic medical costs. If we can raise the remaining $1500 needed, African Mission Healthcare Foundation can provide Rose with a burn contracture release and reconstruction surgery. Rose told Watsi's coordinator at AMHF that she "desires to settle down and raise a family," and this treatment can give her the chance.

Ibrahim is an outgoing little boy who loves to play with his friends. He is the first child of a young married couple who adore him. Ibrahim’s parents have big dreams for him and look forward to seeing him grow up happily. Ibrahim's happiness is threatened, however, by a medical condition that is out of his family's control. He was born with clubfoot, a deformity that makes it difficult for him to walk normally or live an active life. Ibrahim’s mother is nervous that her son won’t be able to attend school or make friends as he gets older because of his condition. Ibrahim is from Tanzania, one of the poorest countries in the world. Almost 90% of Tanzania’s 44 million people live on less than $2 a day, and 60% live on less than $1 a day. Ibrahim’s parents are eager to get medical care for their son, but they work as vegetable sellers and casual laborers on farms and cannot afford the $500 treatment he needs. Doctors at African Mission Healthcare Foundation in Tanzania are confident that with surgery, Ibrahim’s foot deformity can be corrected. We hope to raise the $500 needed to cover the cost of Ibrahim’s care and enable him to live a normal, happy life.

John is a kind-hearted boy who loves school and wants to be successful in life. John’s mother passed away when he was 4 years old, and he has lived with his aunt ever since. John’s aunt works as a teacher. She earns just enough money to support herself and John, but not much more. John dreams of finishing school and living an exciting life, but his dreams are on hold right now because of a serious injury. Four years ago, John experienced an epileptic seizure and fell into a fire. The resulting burns on his legs have turned into severe scar contractures on his foot, and he was forced to stop attending school because of his lack of mobility. Now, John and his aunt have traveled all the way from northern Malawi to seek treatment at CURE’s hospital. Doctors at CURE say that with surgery, they believe it’s possible to restore functionality to John’s foot. We hope to raise the $1000 needed to fully cover the cost of John’s care, enable him to go back to school, and help him live a healthy, productive life.
