Nipely is a one-year-old baby boy living in Haiti. When Nipely was five months old, he began getting sick and having seizures often. His mother took him to our local medical partner, Project Medishare. He was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a buildup of fluid in his brain that places extra pressure on his brain and puts him at increased risk of a stroke, vision loss, and death. For $1,260, Nipely will receive surgery to drain the excess fluid in his skull. Doctors say this will decrease his risk of growing up paralyzed or having nerve damage, and save his life. Dilli is an elderly man from Nepal with three grandsons and two granddaughters. His only dream left in life is to see one of his grandchildren, who are all very bright, become a teacher at their local school. Dilli had the unfortunate accident of falling from his bed while he was asleep. The incident injured his right hip, leaving him immobile and unable to work. The family works in agriculture, making extra money hard to come by because the yield is only for six months of the year. Paying for hip surgery is simply not possible. An improperly healed hip would make daily activities nearly impossible for the rest of his life. For $1240, we can help Dilli regain full range of movement of his leg. Dilli told our medical partner that he wants to get back to work as usual "because if he cannot then his grandson will have to replace him and he is worried that this may affect his grandson's studies." As a result, Estefany has been missing her developmental milestones, stopped growing in height and weight, and her family is very worried about her. Estefany's treatment plan includes intensive nutritional therapy and a complete laboratory workup to rule out other health problems. She will also need micronutrient supplements to put her growth patterns back on track. Our medical partner in Guatemala can provide all of these things with our support. Two-year-old Akiya is a tough little guy. He was born with a congenital malformation that makes him unable to pass stool properly. Because of Akiya’s condition, Akiya’s mother quit working as a teacher to take care of him at home. Akiya and his mother now depend on his father to support the family and pay his medical bills. But even with Akiya’s father’s income, Akiya’s parents are unable to afford the surgery that Akiya requires. Akiya’s mother says, “If my son can get cured, this will be a renewal for me and my family.” For $1,000, we can fund Akiya’s surgery so he can pass stool normally and look forward to a healthy future!

Tha Zin is a nine-year-old girl from Burma, the setting of the world's longest-running civil war. Tha Zin was diagnosed with an orbital pseudotumor when she was six. Her parents took her to Yangon, the former capital of Burma, for surgery. Unfortunately, something went wrong in surgery, and afterwards Tha Zin's eye was even more swollen than before. For the next two years, Tha Zin's parents went into debt traveling to the capital every two weeks to get medication to manage their daughter's condition. Her eye has still not improved, and she's missed a year of school as a result. Quality medical care is scarce in Burma, but Burma Border Projects' partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, can facilitate Tha Zin's care in Thailand. It will cost $1500 to coordinate Tha Zin's surgery, which will either restore function to her eye, or remove it and enable her to continue with school. BCMF writes, "When we ask Tha Zin what she wants when she is older, she is very shy and does not say anything. However, later she comes up to a staff member and tells him that she would like to be a doctor." Let's help make that possible!

Nuritu is a two-month old baby girl who was born with an anorectal malformation that makes it impossible for her to pass stool properly. She needs a $1200 surgery to create the missing outlet. AMHF staff writes, "Nuritu's father is a 29-year-old man who has been in and out of four different hospitals seeking help for his beautiful baby girl. By the time he [arrived at our] hospital, he [had] lost hope and money as well. Nuritu's father is the first born in his extended family, and in addition to Nuritu he has to support his siblings." Nuritu's father says, “If my daughter could start passing stool in the proper way, I will do my best to educate her to become a doctor so that she can help others with such problems."

In 1992, when Rose was only 3 years old, politically instigated riots broke out in the small village in Kenya where she and her family lived. With her parents and siblings all at home, their small house was set ablaze. Sadly, only Rose and her mother made it out alive. Rose incurred severe body burns. Good samaritans rushed her to a nearby hospital where she received emergency medical attention. However, she was unable to get any further surgical assistance due to a lack of finances. It’s been 21 years, and Rose’s body is still deformed due to scaring. Her burned skin is uncomfortable, causes pain, and will eventually lead to permanent disability. Surgery is her best chance at a normal life, but as an employee in a small shop, she can only afford $1000 of her catastrophic medical costs. If we can raise the remaining $1500 needed, African Mission Healthcare Foundation can provide Rose with a burn contracture release and reconstruction surgery. Rose told Watsi's coordinator at AMHF that she "desires to settle down and raise a family," and this treatment can give her the chance.

Patrick was born a healthy baby two years ago. His father works in a timber yard and his mother, Caroline, is a homemaker. She dreams of Patrick walking to school with his older siblings, playing with his friends, and leading a normal life. Patrick starting experiencing medical problems when he was only a few months old. His head starting growing faster than the rest of body, and his young life was complicated even further when he developed a brain tumor. Now, Patrick cannot walk. He is also unable to feed properly and so is at risk of malnutrition. Patrick has braved several initial procedures like a champ, but now he needs our help to treat his condition once and for all. Patrick's doctors need to insert a shunt into his head to reduce its size and prepare for the full removal of his tumor. This procedure can save his life.
