Yom is a 73-year-old basket weaver with five sons, two daughters, and six grandchildren. In his free time, he likes to listen to monks pray on the radio and go to the pagoda. Six months ago, Yom developed a cataract in each eye, causing him blurred vision, tearing, cloudy lenses, and extreme sensitivity to light. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, working, and going anywhere outside. When Yom learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On December 5, doctors performed a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in each eye. After recovery, Yom will be able to see clearly again. Now, he needs help to fund this $292 procedure. "I hope my eyes can see everything more clearly," he says, "so that I can do my work easily and can go anywhere outside by myself."

Mercy is a 40-year-old woman from a village in Malawi. She owns a small business that sells chitenge, a traditional Malawian cloth. She and her husband have five children and one grandchild. In June, Mercy was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She visited four hospitals before finally coming to our medical partner's hospital, Nkhoma Hospital. On December 8, she underwent a hysterectomy. Mercy's family has been very worried about her diagnosis, and they were relieved to learn she would be undergoing surgery. Mercy looks forward to returning to her family and her business cancer-free. Now, she needs help to fund this $643 procedure. "Thank you for the donations," she says. "I have been terribly worried and now, finally, I will have my operation. Thank you."

Jay Bahadur is a 45-year-old carpenter from Nepal. He cut his finger several weeks ago when he was chopping wood. He now has a bacterial infection on the skin and tissues of his left hand, which can spread to the rest of his body. Infections like Jay Bahadur's can be life-threatening if left untreated. But our medical partner, Nyaya Health, can provide Jay Bahadur with surgery to treat the infection. Jay Bahadur hopes to open his own furniture shop one day. With proper healthcare, he can pursue that dream. Let's make it happen!

This precious little guy is one-year-old Johnsley, who lives on the coast of Haiti with his mother and older brother. Johnsley is considerably small for his age, due to a condition known as ventricular septal defect. The condition results in a hole between two chambers of his heart that allows blood to pass through without receiving oxygen. The resulting lack of oxygen in his blood presents challenges to Johnsley’s overall health, making him frequently out of breath, sickly and fussy. Johnsley’s mother is looking for employment, and their extended family helps provide for their basic needs. However, the family has not been able to afford treatment that can help correct Johnsley’s heart condition. Though Johnsley was diagnosed with ventricular septal defect at birth, his family is only now getting the opportunity for treatment. Johnsley's mother says, “Thank you to everyone who is helping Johnsley. I am looking forward to seeing him get bigger after his operation.” For $1,500 we can fund the operation that will surgically close the hole in Johnsley’s heart. The procedure would ensure he gets enough oxygen throughout his blood and does not experience further symptoms from his heart condition. Leon lost his right arm in an accident over 20 years ago, and has never had the opportunity to be evaluated for a prosthesis until now. An independent subsistence farmer, Leon and his family live off of the food he produces. They have no cash income. While Leon has been steadfast in his determination to provide for his family, regaining the use of his arm would significantly increase his ability to do so.
