Branli is a 16-month-old little boy from Guatemala who lives in an adobe home with his parents. Our medical partner, Wuku' Kawoq (WK), reports that Branli likes turtles and cars, and enjoys playing with his cousins. Branli has acute severe malnutrition and diarrhea, WK explains. Without intervention, Branli’s health will continue to worsen. He will be at risk for long term effects of malnutrition and infectious diseases. His sickness also causes him to quickly lose fluids and become severely dehydrated. With $535, Branli can receive growth monitoring, micronutrient supplementation, and medication to recoup some of his lost weight and height. "I can see the fetus moving from outside," says Trizer, a 19-year-old expecting mother from Kenya. "My navel pushes out and my walking style has changed to accommodate the weight." Trizer and her husband work to ensure that they are able to provide for her growing family. She works hard on her farm and sells small fish, tomatoes, and onions at a local market so that she can meet her son's basic needs while her husband operates a motorbike. In her free time. Trizer likes to sleep and listen to music. As Trizer prepares for the birth of her second child, she hopes that things will go well. "I hope to be provided with a safe and successful delivery so that I will not fully depend on my husband, but will be able to work harder on my farm, expand my business and save the profit i get to secure my children's future education," she says. $290 will cover the cost of Trizer's prenatal care for the duration of her pregnancy, safe delivery of the baby in a health facility, as well as postnatal care after the baby is born. Esufat is a three-month-old boy from Tanzania living with hydrocephalus, a serious condition that causes accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. As his head grows in size due to the fluid, Esufat may become blind and unable to perform many normal activities. Esufat’s parents cannot cover the cost of any medical treatments. His father is a casual laborer, and his mother grows vegetables in their small family garden to sell to neighbors. They say, “God has given us a son whom we have been praying for, for many years. Now it is our prayer that he will get proper treatment and resume normal growth.” For $850, Esufat will receive a procedure that will drain the excess fluid from his brain. Hawanatu is five years old. She lives with her family in Sierra Leone, but came to our medical partner in Ghana to seek treatment for a condition called kyphosis, which causes an abnormal curve in her spine. This curvature constricts the space Hawanatu's lungs have to expand, making it difficult for her to breathe deeply. Hawanatu's limited lung capacity impacts her ability to walk, or even sit up, for short amounts of time. Her condition made it so difficult for her to keep up with her classmates in school, that she was bullied to the point where she could no longer attend. Hawanatu's parents are hopeful that their daughter will get better soon, but neither can afford her treatment. Her father works as a school teacher in Sierra Leone but is rarely paid. For $1,500 we can pay for an operation to correct Hawanatu's spine. This surgery will alleviate the pressure on her lungs, make it possible for her to stand and walk on her own, and allow her to move about like the other children in her class. Four-year-old Samuel from Ethiopia is unable to pass stool and he cannot sit down. He has a large, cancerous tumor, but he comes from a large, poor family and his parents are unable to seek medical attention for him. Samuel is currently bedridden because of his condition. Emmanuel is a hardworking man from Kenya. He used to own his own hotel next to a busy bus stop in Nairobi. He had a good relationship with his girlfriend, and he enjoyed a normal, healthy life.
