Joyce is a young, 32-year-old mother of three from Kenya. She lives in a single roomed house with her family in a slum outside of Nairobi. Her husband works at a construction site in Nairobi and this is where he gets money for the upkeep of his family. In December 2014, Joyce felt a lump on her breast and came to Kijabe hospital for a checkup. She was referred to a different facility for chemotherapy. Having finished the sessions, she now requires a mastectomy but is unable to raise the amount needed. During the chemotherapy sessions, Joyce used to walk from one place to another and would ask people to contribute to her treatment, and that is how she raised the funds to meet the cost. As she lives with cancer, Joyce has not been able to attend to her work as a beauty salonist consistently due to pain, and attending previous chemotheraphy sessions that caused her fatigue. If not treated, Joyce is at risk of having the cancer spread to other parts of her body, which might result in premature death. After treatment, the risk of cancer spreading to other parts of Joyce’s body will be lowered which might have caused death. Joyce will be able to attend to her work at the beauty salon and take care of her family. “I want to be free from cancer and have a long life so that I can raise my children," Joyce said.

Ana is a 48-year-old homemaker from Guatemala. After living with diabetes for a long time, Ana underwent a left leg amputation about a year ago. She found our partner, Wuqu Kawoq, thanks to the non-profit's growing "fame" in the area of fitting prosthetics. According to their medical director, Peter Rohloff, this reputation is mostly "due to the successful backing of Watsi donors." "Prosthetics in Guatemala are prohibitively expensive. Most amputees are condemned to live out their lives therefore without access to prosthetics" says Peter Rohloff, medical director at Wuqu Kawoq. "Thanks to the Watsi collaboration, however, we are changing that for patients like Ana, giving them access to the devices they need to lead higher quality lives. For the last 12 months, we've been working intensively with Ana to make sure that her leg stump is well healed and is prepared for the new prosthetic device. She's ready!" He sought treatment and was prescribed eye drops. After two months of using the drops, he completely lost his vision in that eye. Seven months later, he started experiencing the same symptoms in his left eye. Aung Kyaw has now completely lost his vision in his right eye and can now only see the top half of objects out of his left eye. Doctors say Aung Kyaw needs retinal corrective surgery. Aung Kyaw's mother is very worried about his condition. She says she feels helpless. Their family went through their life savings in order to pay for the numerous expensive appointments that ended up causing more harm than good. Aung Kyaw says he would like to get well so he can go back to school. He says he ultimately hopes to work abroad and see the world.
