Srorn, a 53-year-old farmer from Cambodia, was in a moto accident on May 30, 2016. His accident left him with a chronic wound on his lower right leg. The wound is open and infected, causing him pain and difficulty walking. Srorn is married with two sons and three daughters. He enjoys helping his wife with housework. In order to seek treatment for his leg, Srorn traveled three hours with his wife to reach Watsi's medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC). For $392, Srorn will undergo a procedure to mend his leg wound. Surgeons at CSC will perform an excision and flap surgery, during which they will remove the dead and infected tissue in Srorn's leg and utilize a skin graft to repair the site. Once Srorn's wound heals he will be able to walk easily again, allowing him to tend his farm and help his wife around the house.

"I am hoping that Watsi will help me so that I can be well again," Jacinta tells us. "This way, I could meet my dream of starting a green grocery to supplement my husband's income.” Jacinta is a 50-year-old mother of four from Kenya. Her husband is a public vehicle driver, but does not have a stable income. For years, Jacinta has dreamed of opening a grocery store to supplement her husband's income and support her family. But for the past two years, Jacinta has been unable to pursue this dream. She was diagnosed with uterine fibroids -- benign tumors in the lining of her uterus. "Jacinta has been experiencing lower abdominal pain, heavy bleeding and body weakness," says our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). "If not treated, Jacinta will continue to bleed and the body weakness will get worse. She is also likely to suffer from anaemia due to the heavy bleeding." “I have struggled a lot with this condition and it is by God’s grace that I have been directed to come to Nazareth [our partner hospital]," Jacinta shares. For $790, we can fund Jacinta's total abdominal hysterectomy. This procedure will remove her uterus and cervix, and relieve her pain and bleeding. “We expect after treatment, Jacinta will recover fully," AMHF adds. "She will be well again to take care of her family and achieve her dream of starting a business."

Say hello to Joselin, a newborn girl from Guatemala! "This little baby with Down’s syndrome came to see us last week. She has a loud murmur and our ultrasound of the heart shows a defect called a patent ductus," explains our medical partner, Wuqu' Kawoq (WK). "She is experiencing mild heart failure symptoms and is losing weight.” “Joselin’s mom knew about the murmur from the time the baby was born 6 months ago. However, she has such limited financial resources that she was scared and never brought her back to see the doctor,” WK continues. For $1,130, Joselin will receive the heart surgery to treat her heart defect and save her life. “I just want her to get better and to grow up to be healthy. I was so scared, but I’m glad I found you all,” says Joselin’s mom. Let’s help Joselin’s heart beat healthy again!

"Josefa heard about our arthritis clinic from some others who were successfully treated there (and funded by Watsi)," Wuqu' Kawoq (WK) tells us about this 38-year-old woman, loving mother, and only parent to her children from Guatemala. "She hopes that we can help her as well, so that she can 'live in stability in my home and help my children become who they are supposed to be.' " Josefa has had rheumatoid arthritis for the last seven years, with severe joint pain in her hands and feet. "She has never sought help from a doctor for this because she has very limited funds," WK says. "She has trouble walking and most mornings, when she [is] particularly stiff, she can't prepare breakfast or help her children get ready for school." The WK team is on the case and optimistic. "With aggressive medical treatment, we expect that Josefa's pain and joint stiffness/swelling will resolve, and that she will be able to work, walk and care for her children better than she has been able to in the last seven years," they write. “My wish is for him to be able to walk properly, get educated and live a comfortable and better life,” says Kelvin’s father. Say hello to Kelvin, an energetic six-year-old boy from Tanzania who loves learning to read and write. He also enjoys running around and playing hide-and-seek with his friends, although his condition may hinder his ability to do so in the future. Kelvin has a bilateral clubfoot, a condition that causes his feet to turn inward and can lead to early osteoarthritis. His father also has the same condition and wants his son to enjoy a better quality of life as he grows. Kelvin’s parents are small-scale farmers and cannot afford to pay for treatment. For $1,160, Kelvin will receive the treatment necessary for him be able to walk properly and develop normally without the risk of early osteoarthritis.

“It’s like a dream for me that I won’t be sick anymore,” exclaims 13-year-old Saphina. “I never thought it would be possible!” Saphina, who lives with her father and mother in Haiti, loves attending church, helping her mother with her chores, and studying. Born with a heart condition called atrioventricular septal defect, there are holes in her heart “between both the upper and lower chambers of the heart, allowing blood to flow freely among them without passing through lungs for oxygen,” shares our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance. “This makes her sickly and out of breath, and is a life-threatening condition." $1,500 will cover treatment to fix Saphina’s heart and prevent any need for further surgery. Meet Deonisi, a smiling four-year-old boy from Tanzania! “Deonisi is the first born in the family and he is very protective of his little brother,” shares our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation. “Deonisi likes to play with his little brother. Lately he has been enjoying playing with the Lego blocks as well as coloring some pictures.” Deonisi has been diagnosed with bilateral genu valgus, a disorder that affects his gait. His doctors tell us that he "walks with difficulty and will have an increased risk of developing early osteoarthirtis if not treated." Deonisi’s parents are small scale farmers that earn mainly seasonal income; while they work hard to try to cover their daily needs, they need help to cover the cost of Deonisi’s medical care. Deonisi's father says, "We hope that Deonisi's deformity can be corrected so that he can walk normally and Lord willing when he grows up he will be responsible and helpful to us and other people as well."
