Phat is a 55-year-old woman who is a rice farmer along with her husband. Together they have one son. These days Phat cannot go to the rice field because her vision is too poor. Instead, she stays home and enjoys listening to the news and Khmer shows, and hearing the monks pray on the radio. Three years ago, Phat developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her burning, photophobia, and blurry vision. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Phat learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), she traveled for two hours with her husband seeking treatment. On June 16th, the doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, Phat will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure. Phat shares, "I hope my eye irritation can finally stop and I can see clearly so I can return to farming and getting around more easily on my own."

Besigye is a 51-year-old farmer and a married mother of three children. She and her husband are small scale farmers. Their oldest child is 30 years old and married, while their youngest is 18 years old and in secondary school class six. They work hard to have paid for school fees for their children through their farming, and they own a three-room semi-permanent house. Nearly 20 years ago, Besigye began experiencing troubling symptoms, including neck swelling, airway obstruction and mild headaches. She was diagnosed with an enlarged goiter, or enlarged thyroid. She visited our medical partner's care center where surgery was recommended to treat her condition and to prevent her symptoms from getting worse. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare (AMH), is helping Besigye receive treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy on July 6 at AMH's care center where surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. The procedure will cost $293, and she and her family need help raising money. Besigye shared, “I pray that I may be considered for treatment. I am not able to carry luggage with ease and am having airway obstruction. I hope to resume farming as soon as possible.”

Say hello to Soy, a proud father of seven children and grandfather of twenty! Soy is 79-years-old and lives in Cambodia with his family. “Soy’s vision is so blurry due to his cataracts that he is partially blind,” explains our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC). “He can’t see anything more than shapes and finds it difficult to eat, go outside, or do any work by himself." $150 will restore vision in Soy’s right eye. After surgery, CSC tells us, “He wants to go back to his farm, look after his grandchildren, and see the royal palace clearly.”

Seven-year-old Samuel is a cheerful boy from Kenya who needs surgery to treat clubfoot, a condition which prevents him from walking without extreme pain and makes it impossible for him to fully participate in his childhood. Our medical partner in Kenya writes, "Clubfoot is a distressing condition for any parent. Thankfully, the treatment is very straightforward. We are optimistic that surgery and proper follow up will help deal with the condition once and for all." Samuel's surgery costs $1,000. With a straightened foot, Samuel will be able to run and play like his peers. In the future, he'll also have equal opportunities for jobs, since the social stigma around disability won't apply to him.
