Emmanuel is a student from Haiti. He lives with his mother and younger sister in a small village in the mountains of southwest Haiti. He enjoys going to school and would like to be an engineer. Emmanuel has a cardiac condition called rheumatic mitral regurgitation. One of the four valves of his heart is damaged due to an infection he suffered earlier in childhood; as a result, it cannot circulate blood through his body effectively. Emmanuel will fly to Dominican Republic to receive treatment. On May 28, he will undergo cardiac surgery, during which surgeons will remove his damaged valve and implant an artificial replacement. Another organization, The Mitral Foundation, is contributing $8,000 to pay for surgery. Emmanuel's family also needs help to fund the costs of surgery prep. The $1,500 bill covers labs, medicines, and checkup and followup appointments. It also supports passport obtainment and the social workers from our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, who will accompany Emmanuel's family overseas. He says, "I am looking forward to this surgery so that I can start school again!"

Oun is a 60-year-old rice farmer from Cambodia. She has ten grandchildren and enjoys watching both Khmer and Thai TV shows in her free time. Two years ago, Oun developed a cataract in each eye, causing her blurry vision and vertigo. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Oun learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for eight and a half hours seeking treatment. On March 11, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in each eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $398 procedure. She says, "I hope that after my surgery, I will be able to go outside by myself and continue my work at the rice farm."

Ma Saung is a 13-year-old student from Burma. She lives with her grand-parents and nine-year-old brother in Thanbyuzayat, Mon State. Currently, the tightness of her hamstring tendons make her weak and prevent her from walking properly. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, is requesting $1,500 to cover the cost of an Achilles tendon lengthening procedure for Ma Saung, which is scheduled to take place on May 2. This procedure will elongate her Achilles tendon, allowing increased motion at the ankle joint. “I feel depressed when I see other children running and playing,” said Ma Saung. “I really want to walk on my feet.”

Sophat is a 26-year-old meat seller from Cambodia. He likes to play soccer, read books, watch television, and listen to the radio in his free time. Four months ago, Sophat was in a traffic accident, injuring his shoulder. He has been diagnosed with a brachial plexus injury on his right side. The brachial plexus is a nerve network that transmits signals from the spine to the shoulder, arm, and hand. Injuries to this nerve network can result in loss of function and sensation. He is able to move his arm and cannot work or easily take care of himself. Sophat traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On February 15, he will undergo a brachial plexus repair surgery. After recovery, he will be able to regain movement in his right arm. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, is requesting $637 to fund this procedure. He says, "After surgery, I hope that I no longer have any pain and will be able to go back to work."

Rene is a young student from Kenya. She is in the second grade. She is also the only child to her single mother. Renee likes reading books. Rene has clubfoot of her left foot. Clubfoot is a condition in which the foot is twisted out of shape. This causes difficulty walking and even wearing shoes. Fortunately, Rene traveled to visit our medical partner's care center, AIC Cure International Hospital. There, surgeons will perform clubfoot repair surgery on January 23. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $1,224 to fund Rene's clubfoot repair. After treatment, she will be able to walk easily. “I am kindly requesting for support so that she can be able to walk completely well without any support. God bless you," Renee’s mother says.

Srey Mech is a mother of two from Cambodia. She sells clothes at a shop. She has two sons. She likes to go for walks and watch TV. Fifteen years ago, she fell down and broke her hip. She had a hip replacement surgery, but now it needs to be replaced because she has been in chronic hip pain for the past two years. She cannot walk. Fortunately, Srey Mech learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre. At CSC, surgeons can perform a total hip replacement to relieve Srey Mech of her pain and allow her to walk easily. Treatment is scheduled for November 7, and Srey Mech needs help raising $1,025 to pay for this procedure. She says, "I really hope I won't be in pain and will be able to work after the operation."

Medjine is a toddler from Haiti. She lives with her parents and grandparents in the outskirts of Port-au-Prince. She likes dancing and listening to music. Medjine has a cardiac condition called partial anomalous pulmonary vein return. One of the veins leading to her heart connects in an abnormal location, making it difficult for blood to circulate properly through her heart and body. To determine if Medjine's condition is operable, she must undergo a diagnostic cardiac catheterization, a procedure that is not available in Haiti. During the procedure, a catheter probe will be inserted into her heart to perform the necessary measurements and tests. On December 14, she will travel to the Dominican Republic to receive the scan at our medical partner's care center, Clinica Corominas. Our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, is asking for $1,500 to cover the costs of Medjine's travel expenses, catheterization procedure, and lab work. Her mother says, "We are very glad that our daughter can have this opportunity!"

Pya is a 57-year-old man who lives in Karen State, Burma with his wife, daughter, and grandson. Pya’s family owns land on which they grow rice. In March 2017, Pya started feeling pain in his lower abdomen, but he did not seek any medical care. Shortly after this pain developed, it forced him to stop working. Pya used to take herbal medicines for his symptoms. However, they were not very effective, and his condition deteriorated. He could not manage the pain, so he traveled to a clinic, where a medic examined him and performed an ultrasound. He was then referred to Mae Sot Hospital, our medical partner's care center, for further testing. Over three visits, he received an x-ray and blood and urine tests and was diagnosed with bladder stones. Pya was then scheduled for surgery on October 24. In addition to his pain, Pya’s condition has affected numerous other aspects of his life. Because he has had to stop working, his family has been struggling financially. Fortunately, we can help by raising $1,500 to pay for his surgery. Pya says, “I want to be able to work on my own farm again. I want my family to be able to eat well and have meat again.”

Peter is a 40-year-old man from Kenya. He is married with four children, who are all in school. Peter is a welder, while his wife is a vendor at their local market. Two months ago, Peter's left knee and lower leg began to swell and cause him pain. He is no longer working, and he must use a stick as a walking aid. On September 7, Peter will undergo surgery to treat his knee. This procedure will cost $1,165. “I will be happy to see my leg treated because I will be able to resume my work. I will be able to walk and as well provide for my family. I lack words to say but I plead for your support," Peter says.

Danstan is a toddler from Kenya. He is the youngest in a family of three. Danstan’s mother work as a cleaner, while his father is a driver. Danstan has clubfoot of his left foot. Clubfoot is a condition in which the foot is twisted out of shape. This causes difficulty walking and even wearing shoes. Fortunately, Danstan traveled to visit our medical partner's care center, AIC Cure International Hospital. There, surgeons will perform clubfoot repair surgery on September 25. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $1,224 to fund Danstan's clubfoot repair. After treatment, he will be able to walk without pain and difficulty. “I will be glad to see my son walking to school like other children and that is why I am requesting for support," Danstan's mother says.

Teriki is a grandmother from Kenya. She is a mother of four. Currently, Teriki and her husband are living in their son’s home. Her son is a farmer who plants maize in order to support his parents and his children, who are still in school. In June, Teriki sustained injuries on her right arm, forearm, and scalp. She is in chronic pain and is not able to use her left hand. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner can help. On July 19, Teriki will undergo a fracture repair procedure, called an open reduction and internal fixation. This procedure will help her heal and be able to use her hand again. Now, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $771 to fund this procedure. “I am in a lot of pain, please help me,” Teriki says.

Than is a 25-year-old young man from Burma. He lives with his wife, five-year-old daughter, mother-in-law, father-in-law, and two brother-in-laws. In May 2018, Than participated in a soccer tournament. During one game, another player kicked his right leg. He immediately felt a lot of pain in his leg, the leg went limp, and he was unable to walk. A friend took him to a traditional healer in the village. The healer rubbed oil on his leg and bandaged his leg up. Currently, Than feels a lot of pain in his leg and uses crutches to get around. With the help of our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, Than will undergo surgery to reset his fractured bones and ensure proper healing. The procedure is scheduled for June 28 and will cost $1,500. After surgery, Than hopes that he will be free from pain and he will be able to walk properly again. He says, “I want to get better soon so that I can help my family and get back to working.”
