Six-year-old Dipak, who recently started school in Nepal, was playing with his friends when he broke one of the bones in his right elbow. Our medical partner, Possible, explains, “Dipak was playing with his buddies, climbing onto a friend's back. But suddenly, the friend lost his balance, and Dipak came tumbling down and fell onto the ground. His elbow bone was broken.” Dipak’s family immediately took him to a nearby hospital for treatment, but the hospital was not equipped to provide the care he needed. “The only option was to take him to a hospital several hours away,” shares Dipak’s father. “Besides the transportation, lodging, and food costs, it would have cost us a fortune for the operation itself. It would be a huge setback, as we can’t afford that kind of money right now.” For $579, Dipak will undergo surgery to set and cast his broken bone so that it will heal properly. Funding also pays for four nights in the hospital, X-rays, physiotherapy, medicine to relieve pain and prevent infection, and cast removal after his elbow has healed. “After the treatment, Dipak will be attend school again, something he has been looking forward to,” Possible tells us. Meet Aung, an eight-year-old boy from Burma! Our medical partner, Burma Border Projects (BBP), tells us, "Aung really enjoys school and likes studying; he says that he would like to become an eye doctor when he grows up.” Aung has been fighting cancer and previously had his eye removed to prevent tumor spread. The tumor has now spread to his eye socket and needs to be removed. "The tumor currently causes Aung physical and mental discomfort," BBP explains. "After his eye was removed it was hoped that his condition would improve, however, the spread of the tumor has been very difficult for him and his mother. It is physically painful and also causes him a headaches and becomes tired easily." For $1,500, Aung will receive the necessary surgery to remove the tumor. Aung’s mother says, “I really want my son to continue with his education – I never had the opportunity and have had to work a physically difficult job my whole life. I am completely determined to get him treatment no matter how many surgeries he needs.” Let’s help Aung get healthy again!

Juan is a friendly 55-year-old man from Guatemala who is unable to work because his vision is rapidly diminishing. Juan visited Wuqu’ Kawoq, our medical partner in Guatemala, desperate to try and restore his eyesight. Doctors discovered that Juan suffers from an anatomic defect in which his eyelids turn in and scrape across the surface of his eyes. Juan has been living with this condition for many years. He visited many doctors, but couldn't afford care. Finally, because of the pain, he began taking steroids. Unfortunately, the medication worsened his condition and caused him to develop cataracts. For $1500, Juan will not only receive surgery to correct his eyelids and stop the ongoing damage to his eyes, he will also undergo cataract surgery.
