Nine-year-old Soe likes to ride his bike and play with other kids in his town in Burma. Unfortunately, he’s broken his leg three times over the course of his adventures, and the most recent break has caused severe damage to his bone. When Soe had his second leg break, he missed his final exams, and ended up having to repeat first grade. “We are worried that if he works in a laborious job in the future, he might be injured again,” his parents said. They are concerned and want to provide Soe proper treatment, but as rice farmers, Soe's mom and dad are barely able to meet the family's basic needs. Covering Soe's medical care is well out of reach for the family. But with $1,500, we can help pay for the corrective surgery Soe needs to fix his leg. This surgery will help him walk without crutches and return to school with his siblings next semester. Joseph is a hardworking father of two young girls. He’s 44-years-old and lives in Kenya, where he supports his family by working as a driver for a small cargo-moving company. Earlier this year, Joseph was involved in an accident at work and broke his leg. “At the time of the accident, Joseph was rushed to a private hospital where his hospital bill ran to the thousands within a few days. He spent all his savings and the little he got from his employers in an effort to clear the bills,” says our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation. Joseph has not fully recovered from the accident and has been unable to work or provide for his family. “My heart breaks when my young daughter asks for candy and I have to say we cannot afford it. This injury has put a strain on the little my wife earns. I just want to get better so that I can work again and take care of my family,” he says. Little Woodjina is a seven-month-old baby from Haiti who lives with her mother and father in the Haitian countryside. Her parents work in the field to make a living. Woodjina is their first child and she was born with a cleft lip and palate which makes it difficult for her to eat. Our medical partner, Medishare, tells us that Woodjina's mother is not able to breastfeed her baby and it is difficult to even spoonfeed her right now. She is very worried about her daughter's weight. A series of corrective surgeries will help to repair baby Woodjina's lip and mouth, but the cost of the procedure, $960, is out of the family's reach. Sikalioti is a 65-year-old man from Malawi. Sikalioti lives with his wife, who he has been married to longer than he can remember, and together they have five children and 12 grandchildren. The family makes a living by farming and selling mandasi, traditional donuts in their village. Unfortunately Sikalioti has an enlarged prostate, which causes him considerable discomfort and difficulty performing normal activities. "He cannot urinate normally, putting him at risk of irreversible kidney failure,” our partners at World Altering Medicine tell us. “A catheter had to be placed through his abdomen to remove urine from his bladder due to his prostate enlargement. He is relied upon as the elder of the house, and his illness is affecting the whole family, as they rely on him for food security through his farming." Treatment of his condition costs $745, which is expected to relieve him of further pain related to his condition and will help him bounce back so he can return to work and caring for his family. His family says, “we can't wait for him to get better, so we can lead a normal life again!"

Meet Lizzy, an extraordinary woman who lives in a small village in western Panama. She has 13 children, and is also a grandmother, and a great grandmother, Lizzy is the matriarch of her family. Since bearing so many children, she now lives with an umbilical hernia - where parts of her intestines are pushed through the abdominal muscles and bulge out under her skin. Every time Lizzy carries something, uses the bathroom, coughs, or even sits, she is in discomfort. If the blood supply to the herniated intestines is constricted, she is at risk of life-threatening complications. Lizzy has been living with this condition for 10 years, and has not been able to afford proper medical care. For $1200, our medical partners at Floating Doctors will perform a surgical repair of her umbilical hernia and provide follow-up medical care. Her doctor says, “This care will allow Lizzy to be free from constant pain, free from the constant risk of strangulation of her bowels, and free to concentrate on spending time with her large family and continuing to be the guiding presence in their lives.”

Himal is a fun-loving twelve-year-old. He adores science, wants to be a doctor when he grows up, and lives with his family in Nepal. A couple of days ago, when climbing a tree, Himal lost his footing and fell to the ground. He broke a hand and a leg, which led to severe pain and swelling. Himal's family owns a small piece of land, but it doesn't yield enough crop to provide a meaningful income. They can't afford to pay for Himal's medical treatment.
