Fifteen years ago, Myint Soe fainted while working at a factory. The medic at the factory warned her about cardiac problems, but she was unable to afford the care she needed. Since then, Myint Soe has been coping with fatigue, chest pain and difficulty breathing. Recently divorced, she now works in the markets selling dry snacks to try to support herself and three children. Her family helps when they can, but she barely earns enough money to get by - let alone pay for an expensive surgery to treat her heart condition. When asked about the difficulties her illness has caused, she responds in tears. The stress from the pain, and the debt from related medical bills is increasing. When three-year-old Than Win’s parents noticed that their son was breathing irregularly, they took him to a clinic, where an X-ray revealed that he had a screw lodged in his lungs. The screw in Than Win's lungs is causing the otherwise happy child to have problems with his respiratory system. Than Win’s doctors believe that they can remove the screw surgically. The endoscopy and surgery that would remove the screw and return Than Win's respiratory system to normal costs $1,200. Than Win’s father is a Burmese tenant farmer, paying a rental fee in order to work another farmer’s land, and he doesn't have much disposable income to put towards this procedure. Pratik is a 1 ½-year-old boy with an undescended testicle, a common abnormality that if left untreated, could lead to infertility later in life. Fortunately, Pratik can have surgery to correct his condition. His doctors believe that with surgery, “Pratik will be able to grow up as a healthy child.” Pratik lives with his father, mother, and two sisters in a mountainous region of Nepal where the average per capita income is $1 per day. His parents earn their living farming. They work hard to support the family, but don’t make enough money to pay for Pratik’s medical treatment. Pratik’s parents hope that when he grows up, he will become a health worker and serve their community. They want him to get healthy so he can have a normal, happy life.
