At only a month old, Juliet is battling a life-threatening illness that is likely to be fatal if left untreated. Juliet comes from a loving family. When she started experiencing brutal convulsions and a fever, her grandparents encouraged her mother to take her to the hospital immediately. She was diagnosed with hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is a condition that causes fluid buildup in the brain. Surgeons at CURE International are pioneering a new way of treating hydrocephalus that is incredibly effective and saves the lives of babies like Juliet every day. It will take $1,750 for CURE to provide this surgery to Juliet free of cost. Donations on Watsi will help cover the cost of this life-changing care.

The doctor who submitted Caroline’s case to Watsi describes her as “a precious girl who was born normal and healthy.” Caroline’s parents adore her. Her father works as an administrator for the local power company, and her mother stays at home to raise her and her siblings. They want Caroline to grow up to live a happy and healthy life. Three years ago, Caroline’s knees started hurting so badly that she couldn’t walk. She is at the age where she should be going to school, but she is restricted by complete immobility. Her parents currently carry her everywhere, but they know this isn’t a sustainable solution for the rest of her life. Watsi Medical Partner CURE International conducts regular mobile clinics, where they identify patients in need of critical medical care from the most marginalized communities. Caroline was identified during one of these clinics, and her case was so serious that they referred her back to CURE’s main hospital for surgery. It will cost CURE $1000 to cover the cost of Caroline’s surgery. Malawi is one of the least developed countries in the world, according to the Human Development Index, and Caroline’s parents can’t even come close to being able to afford the medical care she needs to live a normal life. We hope to raise the money needed to pay for Caroline's surgery and enable her to walk.

Ezra suffers with the most common and completely treatable congenital deformity throughout the developing world – clubfoot. Ezra has a case of relapsed clubfoot affecting his right leg. Without surgery, he will be unable to walk, and running is out of the question. This affects his ability to go to school, play with friends, and live a normal life. Fortunately, the doctors at CURE Malawi can operate on Ezra to change that. Ezra lives in an economically disadvantaged family in the extremely economically disadvantaged country Malawi. His parents have the same hopes for him that each of us would for our own children – to have a bright future with meaningful work and a family of his own– but without the ability to walk those dreams won’t be possible. After surgery, attending school, finding a job, and having a family of his own someday will be possible for Ezra.

Emiliana is a 52-year-old mother of three young school children fighting non-Hodgkins lymphoma. She has powered through most of her chemotherapy like a champ, and has just three more rounds to go before she is finished with treatment. Emiliana has a large and devoted family that has been able to scrape together enough cash to pay for her medical expenses so far, but their financial resources are now exhausted. Without medical insurance or a safety net to catch her, Emiliana is out of options. If Emiliana gets these last three rounds of treatment, she will have a fair shot at getting back to being the strong and healthy mother that her young children need. Durga is a 14-year-old girl from Nepal with rheumatic heart disease, a condition that causes heart palpitations, fever, shortness of breath, and can be fatal if left untreated. With surgery, Durga’s condition can be treated and she will be able to live a normal, healthy life. When our Medical Partner sent us Durga’s profile, they flagged it as urgent. Until she has enough money for surgery, she will need a penicillin shot every 21 days. Because she can't walk, her family has to pay for public transportation to the hospital. This is straining their already tight finances and making it less likely that they will ever be able to save enough for the surgery Durga needs. In an email to Watsi, Durga's doctor said she started crying when he asked her about her dreams for the future. She said she wants to become a teacher but isn't sure whether she will live long enough to achieve her dreams. We can make sure she does. Let's do this!
