This is Pyae Sone, a 19-year-old woman who lives in Burma with her parents, an aunt, two brothers, and her sister. She has lived in the village her entire life, unable to work due to health limitations. Pyae Sone first started experiencing symptoms of fever, pain in her chest and joints, difficulty breathing, and difficulty urinating when she was only 13 years old. Since then, Pyae Sone has been in and out of hospitals in worsening condition.
Last year, Pyae Sone's echocardiogram revealed that she suffers from faulty cardiac valves. Pyae Sone requires surgical treatment to correct her heart defect, but her father, a day laborer, and her mother, a seamstress, are unable to afford the operation. Without medical attention, Pyae Sone's health continues to worsen: occasional blood when she coughs and more severe chest pain extending around the side of her thoracic cavity are a few of the current complications. She is now unable to sleep.
Pyae Sone needs a complex cardiac surgery to mend the weakened arterial vessels of her heart and to prevent further aortic dissection, or tears in the wall. After the operation, Pyae Sone can learn English and pick up her studies again in good health.
Pyae Sone hopes to return home and continue helping her mother work with fabric. She said: "I would like to be a fashion designer and design clothes for teenagers."
