Meet Cherry! Cherry is a 30-year-old mother of three who lives in Burma with her family. Together they have a farm where they plant rice, and her oldest daughter has just started school. After her third child, Cherry felt a small mass in her pelvic area. She “experiences fatigue, cannot work for long hours, and feels uncomfortable when sitting or standing for a long time,” explains Cherry’s medical team at the Burma Border Projects. For $865, Cherry will receive an OB/GYN medical procedure that will address her cervical mass. “I really want to get well soon so I can take care of my family again,” says Cherry. Meet Charity! She’s an aspiring entrepreneur in Kenya, who dreams to one day have a business of her own. She is a loving wife and mother of two. Our medical partners at African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF) say “The youngest son is still in school, the eldest son works at a car wash station, and her husband is a security guard at a local school.” “Charity has been experiencing sharp pains and bleeding on the side of her abdomen,” AMHF explains. “Her medical condition includes an ovarian cyst and fissure of the anus. If not treated the cysts could become cancerous.” For just $620, Charity will have surgery to remove the cysts as well as a lateral anal incision to treat the fissure and head off any risk of future cancer. Her family is not able to afford the treatment, so let’s help her overcome her condition and get back on track to becoming a business owner!

“I pray for my baby’s feet to be straight so when she grows up she can walk like her sisters and does not become dependent on other people due to an inability to walk,” shares Anna’s mother. Meet Anna, a happy, adorable baby girl. “Anna was born with congenital deformity of the feet called bilateral clubfoot,” says our medical partner African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). “When Anna starts to walk, she will use the lateral aspect of her feet for walking, which is painful and will affect her gait.” Anna is the fourth born child and lives with her family in Tanzania. Determined to provide for her family, Anna’s mother has a plan of starting a small business which sells green bananas. “As much as she wants to help her baby girl, at this time she cannot afford the cost of treatment which her daughter needs,” explains AMHF. $1,160 will cover Anna’s full treatment plan, including x-rays, casts, clubfoot surgery, and recovery. Once treated, Anna will have a normal gait when she starts to walk and she will be able to perform everyday activities without any problems. “It’s like a dream for me that I won’t be sick anymore,” exclaims 13-year-old Saphina. “I never thought it would be possible!” Saphina, who lives with her father and mother in Haiti, loves attending church, helping her mother with her chores, and studying. Born with a heart condition called atrioventricular septal defect, there are holes in her heart “between both the upper and lower chambers of the heart, allowing blood to flow freely among them without passing through lungs for oxygen,” shares our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance. “This makes her sickly and out of breath, and is a life-threatening condition." $1,500 will cover treatment to fix Saphina’s heart and prevent any need for further surgery. Sikalioti is a 65-year-old man from Malawi. Sikalioti lives with his wife, who he has been married to longer than he can remember, and together they have five children and 12 grandchildren. The family makes a living by farming and selling mandasi, traditional donuts in their village. Unfortunately Sikalioti has an enlarged prostate, which causes him considerable discomfort and difficulty performing normal activities. "He cannot urinate normally, putting him at risk of irreversible kidney failure,” our partners at World Altering Medicine tell us. “A catheter had to be placed through his abdomen to remove urine from his bladder due to his prostate enlargement. He is relied upon as the elder of the house, and his illness is affecting the whole family, as they rely on him for food security through his farming." Treatment of his condition costs $745, which is expected to relieve him of further pain related to his condition and will help him bounce back so he can return to work and caring for his family. His family says, “we can't wait for him to get better, so we can lead a normal life again!"

Vumilia is a hungry and happy baby who loves to be in her mother's arms. Vumilia's mother is a single parent who works as a casual laborer in Tanzania, mainly doing farm work. Vumilia was born with a mass on her lower back. This mass is vulnerable to rupturing and leaking cerebral spinal fluid, which could put Vumilia's life in danger. “My hope is to see my daughter getting better and grow like other children so that I can work. Right now, she needs extra attention and I’m left with fewer hours to work,” her mother says. The cost of Vumilia's care is well beyond the family's reach. For $1,025, our hospital partner in Tanzania will be able to treat the mass on her back. By inserting a shunt, Vumilia will be out of danger of losing cerebral spinal fluid and contracting infections. Let's make sure Vumilia can grow up healthy.

This is Fikirete, a 14-year-old young lady from Ethiopia. She is a sweet, quiet girl who lives with a large family of five brothers and sisters! Before getting sick, Fikirete used to enjoy cooking and preparing meals for her family. Almost two years ago Fikirete was diagnosed with osteomyelitis of the left hip, an infection of the bone and bone marrow. She lives with severe pain which has caused her to leave school. Fikirete wants to get well so that she can go back to school and help her family around the house. Of her parents she says, “I want to help them.” For $440, Fikirete can receive an osteotomy, a procedure in which the dead and diseased bone tissue is removed. Doctors except that the osteotomy will allow Fikirette to recover fully and be pain-free. She should be able to go back to school and live an active life. Meet Soinize, a 50-year-old woman from Haiti who has a type of cancer in her eye known as squamous cell carcinoma. Because of this she has clouded retinas, partial loss of vision, and severe irritation. Soinize is in so much pain that she is often unable to sleep at night. Soinize's husband passed away, so she cares for her four children and pays for their schooling by herself. She washes clothes for her neighbors and sells goods on the street to earn some money, but it’s not enough to support her family and pay for her own medical treatment. To get the appropriate treatment for her cancer, Soinize will need to spend six weeks at a hospital in the Dominican Republic. She needs surgical intervention, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. With $1500 we can help support Soinize on her long journey to health.

Even though Malaika is still unable to speak, she is able to make friends easily and always with a smile on her face! Malaika loves to wear dresses and dance to music in her free time, too. Malaika has a condition called an AV canal defect, where blood moves freely between the four chambers in the heart rather than passing normally from one chamber to the next. Children who have Down syndrome like Malaika often have this condition. Due to her condition, Malaika is often tired and out of breath, and she has not grown as quickly as she should. If Malaika does not receive surgery soon, her condition may turn fatal. Malaika's mother says, "We have traveled to the Dominican Republic three times to try to find surgery for Malaika, and I was almost ready to give up. I am very happy that we have finally found help for her." For $1500, we can fund Malaika's surgery so she can lead a healthy life without further complications!

Eva is receiving care at a one-week surgery camp made possible by visiting surgeons from two US-based organizations; WOGO (Women Orthopedist Global Outreach) and Operation Walk, at our partner hospital in Tanzania. Watsi has committed to posting as many patients from the camp who need financial support as needed. Eva is a mother of six children and a grandmother of fifteen children. She currently has two milking cows and sells fresh milk in town. One rainy day, while walking with a bucket full of milk on her head, she slipped and fell down. The bucket full of milk hit her just above her right knee. "Ever since that accident she started having problems with her knee," staff at our hospital partner write. "Slowly by slowly she had to sell her cows as she could no longer take care of them. Four of her children are married and struggling to take care of their families and two children are still depending on Eva. va has been taking care of the whole family and now she needs help to treat her knee so that she can continue to care for her family." For $960 Eva will receive this essential knee replacement at the WOGO surgery camp. She says, “If I can only walk without feeling the pain on my knee, I’ll get more cows and sell more milk and life will be much better at home. I still have strength, I just can’t do much because of my knee.”

Juvensio is an energetic one-year-old who lives with his mother in Zambia. He was born with spina bifida, a dangerous condition which leaves the spine protruding in a fluid filled sack on his back, which makes Juvensio susceptible to infection and spinal cord damage. Bernadette, Juvensio's mom, is certain that her baby boy is going to be a great man some day. Even when family and friends suggested she abandon Juvensio, Bernadette stood up to them. The benefits of addressing Juvensio's condition are promising, he would be less susceptible to infection, spinal damage, and no longer be at risk of fatality. The cost of the procedure, called a meningocele repair, is out of reach for Juvensio and his mother. With $2000 we can help Juvensio move on with his life. We can give him the opportunity to make his loving mother's dreams for him come true: to become a great man.

This smiley chap is Perez from Kenya. He's four, and outgoing and headstrong for his age. He talks at the top of his voice and runs a lot. “He is always inclined to spend time and hang out with children who are older than him. You will rarely find him with his agemates,” his father Amos says. Perez was born with clubfoot, a deformity of the lower leg that can bring physical pain and without treatment, disability. His loving parents have worked hard to reverse their sons' condition. Very early Perez got serial castings on his leg, helping reduce the deformity, thanks to which he is already an active little boy. $1000 will provide Perez with the final surgery to completely correct his leg. This will allow him to grow up physically able to do anything he wants. Perez's leg will also look perfectly normal, which is important, as clubfoot carries social stigma in Kenya. If Perez does not get this last surgery, his deformity will get progressively worse over time, causing him pain and eventually disability.
