Meet Julio, a beloved one-year-old from Guatemala! Julio is currently experiencing acute malnutrition, including severe weight loss that has been difficult to treat. Our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq, adds, “Julio is chronically ill as well, with a very limited appetite and severe diarrhea.” Due to financial status, Wuqu’ Kawoq says Julio’s parents “are finding it impossible to meet his medical and nutritional needs, and they need our help.” Though his parents cannot afford Julio’s treatment, their desire to help their son has no bounds. Julio’s mother explains, “I’ve tried everything, but I don’t have any money, and I don’t know why he won’t grow.” After being referred to our partner through the Guatemalan government, Wuqu’ Kawoq is certain they can help. Meet Nayan, a hardworking and ambitious 20-year-old who lives in Nepal with his mother and two brothers. Our medical partner, Possible, shares, “Nayan wants to study hard and pass the exams. He then wants to go to the army and earn some money so that he can help his family.” In a recent farming accident, Nayan fractured a metacarpal bone in his left hand. Possible explains, “Nayan was plowing the field when he was hit by one of the oxen in the left hand. He then developed a painful swelling.” His doctors say, “He feels a terrible pain while he tries to move his hands and therefore he cannot do ordinary personal activities let alone work in the field. It is difficult for him to attend school.” Nayan tells us, “We have no sources of income. All three of us brothers want to study but we have to struggle to eat even after we take loans. As a result of a farming accident in which a water buffalo’s horn pierced his eye, Navin has a traumatic cataract in his right eye that has caused blurred vision. Navin is a 17-year-old student from Cambodia. The youngest in his family, he likes playing soccer and studying Khmer history in school. This is Santa! She is a 45-year-old mother to five young children from Guatemala. Santa works in the agriculture field and weaves in her home in order to support her family. Santa "hopes to stay healthy so that she can spend many years with her family to come." Santa recently came to our medical partner, Wuqu' Kawoq, to have a cervical cancer screening appointment. Because Guatemala has very limited health care, this was Santa's very first screening. They discovered a precancerous spot on her cervix, which "could progress to cancer over the next several years and become a major health problem." Santa's condition is totally curable and for $210 we can make sure she gets the healthcare she needs! Santa says, "I'm glad I got my pap smear. Sheila is a three-year old girl living in Kenya with her mother. Sheila's mom is a single parent who works as a casual laborer to support her family. "Sheila was born without an anal opening and she has never been able to pass stools normally," African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF) tells us. "Sheila has a colostomy which leaves her susceptible to infections." At three, Sheila has already undergone two major surgeries to rectify this situation. She was brought to AMHF for further care by well-wishers who wanted to help Sheila and her mother out. Right now Sheila needs a colostomy closure so that she can have normal bowel movements. "I am looking forward to the day my daughter will pass stools normally like other children," her mother says. The AMHF team is prepared to make this happen for Sheila.
