Aracely is a nine-month-old girl from Guatemala. Her parents cannot afford to give her the calories, protein, and nutrients she needs to grow. For this reason, she is only the size of a healthy three-month-old. She also experiences frequent gastrointestinal infections. Aracely has been diagnosed with acute malnutrition. She has little energy to grow, and her immune system is weak and vulnerable to illness. She is also at risk of chronic disease and delayed development. Fortunately, she began malnutrition treatment on November 24, 2016. Aracely loves to play with her stuffed animals with her older sister, Martina. She also loves eating bananas, apple, and beans. She lives with her older sister and her parents in a one-room house with a tin roof. Her father works as a day laborer, harvesting crops on a local plantation. Her mother is a weaver of traditional Mayan textiles. Her parents need help to fund this $512 treatment. While malnutrition can have devastating effects, it is also very treatable. Growth monitoring, micronutrients, and food supplementation will help Aracely recover. She will gain weight and grow taller to catch up with other children her age, and her immune system will grow stronger. Community health workers will teach her mother about creating a nutrient-rich diet from limited resources. Treatment will give Aracely a chance to grow healthy and strong. "I am so appreciative to be able to enter into this program for my daughter," says Aracely's mother. "I did not know that she was malnourished, and now I am excited to learn how I can help her recover."

Ramcel is a four-year-old boy from the Philippines. He enjoys playing with his toy ball. He lives with his parents and five siblings in a hut made of palm fronds and bamboo. Ramcel’s father is a carpenter, while his mother is a housewife. Ramcel has been diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition. He began $268 malnutrition treatment on October 19. Ramcel is being treated by International Care Ministries (ICM), a Watsi medical partner. One out of five children under five in ICM communities is either severely or moderately acutely malnourished. Worldwide, poor nutrition is associated with nearly half of all deaths in young children. In remote communities and urban slums of the Philippines, the lack of clean water and unclean environments add risk to potentially fatal childhood diseases. ICM’s Home-Based Feeding program provides nutrient-enriched food packs to ensure malnourished children get additional food to regain normal weight and achieve optimum physical and mental development. After identifying a child as malnourished, staff and community volunteers make weekly visits to monitor this child’s progress. To help sustain the health of the child, ICM's professional staff educate the mother, guardian, or other family members about proper nutrition, sanitation, hygiene, and organic vegetable gardening. "I pray that Ramcel is in good health and recovers from his current situation," says his mother. "I am hoping that he can go to school."

Bridgette is a tiny, one-month-old baby girl from Kenya who has hydrocephalus, a condition caused by excess cerebral spinal fluid and manifests itself in an enlarged head circumference. Bridgette’s mother stays at home to take care of Bridgette and her 5-year-old brother, who just started school. Bridgette’s father supports them through his M-Pesa stand (mobile money transfer agent). He doesn’t make much money, and they cannot afford to pay Bridgette’s medical bills. They urgently need help to pay for Bridgette’s operation to help her live a long and healthy life. It was discovered that Bridgette had hydrocephalus through a scan during one of her mother’s prenatal checkups. She was delivered prematurely through C-Section in a hospital near home, and was admitted immediately after birth since her symptoms became worse. She needed specialized treatment, but the hospital she was in didn’t have the resources to help her. They were referred to Bethany Kids at Kijabe Hospital where Bridgette was seen by a consultant. He advised Bridgette’s parents that she needed and operation to help manage the growth of her head and prevent further complications such as brain damage and delayed milestones. For $685, Bridgette will undergo the shunt procedure she needs to live a healthy life. “I am glad to have found a place where Bridgette can be treated. My only plea is that you will help fund for her surgery as I have no means," shared Bridgette’s mother.

Ann is a middle aged woman from Nakuru, Kenya. She is a mother to two children. Her husband has hip problems and has not been able to work since 2013. The family relies on help from neighbors, and they live in a four roomed house, which is incomplete as the husband got sick before its completion. He was the sole provider of the family. Ann used to sell cakes to supplement her family income. She has since stopped as she is not able to walk with ease. In 2013 September, Ann complained of back pains and made several visits to the hospital. She was given pain management drugs. She needed an x-ray which she took after several months due to financial burdens. The images indicated swollen veins and muscle on her back and legs. In 2015, after several clinical visits, she had an MRI done which indicated that Ann had arthritis. Ann is not able to walk or move with ease and has thus stopped working. She has to rely on friends to assist her as her husband is bedridden. If not treated, Ann will continue having a lot of pain and numbness. She risks having permanent disability. Surgery was recommended but she has not been able to raise the amount needed. A spinal fusion will cost $1500, and is expected to significantly improve Ann's condition. “I want to be well to work and provide for my family," Ann shared.
