In December 2012, Vanny fell down the stairs and fractured her left elbow. Her initial injuries were treated, but they have since not healed properly and her elbow has become deformed. She finds it difficult to carry things and often experiences pain at nighttime. Surgery will help to re-position the bones so they heal in alignment, and she will be able to move her arm again without any discomfort. Vanny enjoys studying Khmer literature at school and likes to watch television and play games with her older brother.

Menaka is a 12-year-old girl from Nepal. She was returning from school when she stumbled on a stone and fell down, fracturing her left elbow. She has been in a lot pain since and has been crying. She has difficulty moving her injured arm, and there is some swelling too. To seek medical treatment, Menaka's parents took a four hour jeep ride to reach Possible's hub - Bayalpata hospital. Menaka studies in fifth grade. She lives with her parents and her brother. While her father works in India, her mother tends to the farm to keep the family going. Because of her fractured elbow, Menaka needs help with his everyday work like eating, bathing and dressing up. She is also forced to miss school. With $195, she can receive casting that will allow her fracture to heal properly. Menakas's father says, "I hope she gets well soon and returns to the school."

"Tilak is 11 years old and a happy kid in grade six. He likes to study hard in school and play with his friends from the neighborhood whenever he can," shares our medical partner, Possible. Tilak lives with his family in Nepal. When he was younger, his father took him to eastern India to treat an infection. The doctor diagnosed Tilak with a hernia, a condition where internal organs protrude through a weak spot or tear in the cavity where it normally resides. However, Tilak's family could not afford the cost of the surgery he needed, so he remained untreated. For $491, we can fund a hernia repair operation for Tilak. "After the operation and recovery, Tilak will not have to worry about the hernia growing larger and eventually irreversible," Possible says.

This is Sok La, a 31-year-old woman from Cambodia who was diagnosed with chronic otitis media, or inflammation of the middle ear. "I'm very worried about her since she has had this discharge for so long, and I hope that she can get the operation she needs," says her husband. "Sok La has two sons. When she isn’t farming, she goes to the market to sell her crops," describes Children's Surgical Centre, our medical partner. According to them, she has been dealing with her condition for the past seven years, with hearing loss in her left ear. Unfortunately, the ear infections and discharge associated with her condition have also left her with frequent headaches and pain.
