Despite receiving a month of traditional Khmer medicine, 26-year-old Veasna is still living with a painful fractured right forearm. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), shares that Veasna acquired this injury from a car accident in late October. "I can't do anything since the accident and it is difficult to write," he says. Veansa is a university student in Cambodia and is pursuing a degree in finance, so his injured forearm makes doing schoolwork much more difficult. When he isn't studying, "he enjoys playing volleyball, and watching the news on TV," CSC shares. He sought treatment at CSC after one of his sisters had a successful surgery there in the past. Doctors recommend that Veasna undergo an open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) procedure to fix his forearm. During this procedure, doctors make an incision to realign and set the bones with plates and screws. $405 covers the cost of surgery, food, hospital stay, and post-operative care. CSC expects that Veasna will be able to return to his normal life and keep pursuing his finance degree with a healthy arm. "I hope after the operation I can write again with my arm and continue going to school," Veasna says.

Six-year-old Srey Lin lives with her family in Cambodia. She has one older brother and one older sister, and enjoys playing with toys, painting, and watching music videos. Srey Lin’s uncle brought her to our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), because of a persistent swelling on her right eye. CSC diagnosed Srey Lin with a chalazion — a benign cyst that causes pain, burning, discharge, and swelling. I am afraid it will get bigger and I won't be able to see,” Srey Lin shares. For $150, we can fund a chalazion removal surgery for Srey Lin. “After a chalazion incision surgery, Srey Lin's cyst will be removed and her pain and irritation will be relieved,” CSC says. Srey Lin’s uncle adds: ”I hope I won't have to worry about her vision becoming worse in the future."

Meet Mackilin, a nine-month-old girl from Uganda. “Mackilin was found abandoned crying in the bush and rescued by a local family,” says our medical partner, The Kellermann Foundation (KF). Mackilin has acute malnutrition, which is causing her to have lethargy and diarrhea. She also has an increased susceptibility to infections. KF tells us, “Mackilin’s adoptive father is a soldier and her adoptive mother is a border guard at the border of Uganda and the Congo.” KF continues, “they have a large family of their own and are unable to pay for the hospitalization of Mackilin.” Malnutrition is treated with hospitalization to administer therapeutic foods to rehabilitate the body as well as antibiotics to fight off infections. For $375, Mackilin will be hospitalized for ten days to receive the necessary medication to bring her back to good health. Mackilin’s mother tells us, “we believe Mackilin is a gift from God and thank you very much for helping her.”
