Meet Sushmita, an eight-year-old girl from Nepal! Sushmita lives with her parents, brother, and sister. She is in class 3 in school and especially enjoys studying English. In her free time, she plays skipping with her friends. Recently, Sushmita has developed an infected lesion on her face. The infection is quite painful and has grown in size, making it difficult for her to focus in school or sleep well at night. For $215, Sushmita will receive antibiotics for her infection as well as drainage and dressing for the lesion. This will give her relief from the pain she’s been experiencing, allowing her to focus in class and get a good night’s sleep. Meet little German, a two-week-old baby from Guatemala. German was born a healthy baby boy, but his delivery led to complications for his mom and required her to be in the hospital for some time. "Because of her illness, German’s mom has barely been able to produce any milk, and he’s been losing weight rapidly as a result," our hospital partner, Wuqu' Kawoq (WK), tells us. “German's mother came to us this week asking for help. She is very worried about her baby's health, and she has no household income to speak of. Milk formula is extremely expensive, and she has no way to pay for it.” For $1,220, German and his mother will receive growth monitoring by nutrition experts and infant formula for his first year of life. His mom will also receive coaching on continuing breastfeeding and supplementing with formula. "With this treatment, German will regain weight quickly and should go on to grow and develop completely normally," the WK team tells us. Let's make it happen.

Maria, a newborn just under two weeks old from Guatemala, was the result of an undesired pregnancy. Luckily, a wonderful family in a rural community eagerly adopted Maria, raising her as their own. The major problem is that, since she is adopted, there is no maternal milk supply. Furthermore, her new family is quite poor and can't therefore afford to buy milk formula for the baby. They are struggling to scrape together what money they have, but in the meantime, the child is losing weight and not growing well." They add, "it was a real pleasure to meet this family, the parents are so excited to have a new baby and to be able to have adopted this little one out of a bad situation. For $1500, she will receive a stabilization of her retinal disease and removal of cataracts, leading to major improvements in both her quality of life and overall independence. Because of how rapid it was growing, and because it felt very firm, we were actually initially concerned that it was a cancer and we did a biopsy which fortunately was positive only for lipoma, a benign condition.
