Yona is a farmer from Malawi. He recently traveled to our medical partner’s care center, Kabudula Community Hospital. Kabudula is a rural community outside of the capital city of Lilongwe. The health catchment area serves roughly 350,000 people, but the health centers and the hospital are often poorly stocked and staffed.  One of Yona’s teeth has been causing him bothersome symptoms. Diet is an issue for dental health in Malawi, where sugarcane is prevalent. Also, there is little to no oral health education in Malawi and limited access to a dental professional. In fact, there are fewer than 20 dentists across the country. Fortunately, a visiting dentist will perform a dental extraction. A dental extraction is a simple procedure with few risks, and it will result in a significant reduction in his symptoms. Yona is scheduled to undergo treatment on July 24. Our medical partner, World Altering Medicine, is requesting just $28 to fund the procedure.

Roque is a 21-month-old baby boy from the Philippines. He lives with his parents and four other siblings. Roque was recently diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition, a condition that results from consuming too few calories, proteins, and nutrients. Due to his condition, Roque has a weakened immune system, which increases his likelihood of becoming sick. Beginning on July 7, Roque will receive at-home malnutrition treatment through our medical partner, International Care Ministries (ICM). ICM will provide Roque with nutrient enriched food packs to help him gain weight and achieve optimal physical and mental development. The program will also teach his family about proper nutrition, sanitation, and organic gardening to better care for their son. ICM is requesting $261 to cover the cost of Roque's ongoing care. "I hope that my son will fully recover," says his mother.

Mackline is a five-year-old girl who lives with her parents and four siblings. Her father, Milton, picks tea leaves to earn a living. Mackline has been diagnosed with severe malnutrition. Her symptoms include stunted growth, diarrhea, and poor concentration. Without health insurance, her father was reluctant to bring her to the hospital. Fortunately, Mackline and her younger brother were both referred to our medical partner's hospital, Bwindi Community Hospital, for treatment. With the help of Watsi's medical partner, the Kellermann Foundation, Mackline began treatment on November 5. She will receive the nutritional supplementation, growth monitoring, and follow-up she needs to ensure she remains healthy and strong. Mackline's family will be contributing $4, but they need help to fund this $316 treatment. “I am very appreciative of the support you render for my daughter’s treatment," says Milton. Our support will allow Mackline to enjoy a healthy childhood.

David is a five-year-old boy from Tanzania. He is the second-born of three children. His parents are subsistence farmers. David has trouble breathing, especially at night when he snores. He falls ill much more often than his peers. David's parents sought treatment from several hospitals without success. Finally, they were referred to our medical partner's care center, The Plaster House. David underwent a tonsilectomy on November 29. This surgery should reduce his breathing problems. Now, his family needs help to fund this $545 procedure. "I hope that you can help my son," says David's mother. "Thank you!"

Anibal is an 11-month-old boy from Guatemala. He has been diagnosed with acute malnutrition. This means he has little energy to grow, and his immune system is weak and vulnerable to illness. He is also at risk of chronic disease and delayed development. Fortunately, Anibal began malnutrition treatment on November 24, 2016. Anibal lives with his family in a one-room adobe house with a tin roof. He loves to play with his teddy bear and eat bananas. His father works as a day laborer on a local plantation, but he cannot afford his son's $512 treatment. While malnutrition can have devastating effects, it is also very treatable. Growth monitoring, micronutrients, and food supplementation will help Anibal recover. He will gain weight and grow taller to catch up with other children his age, and his immune system will grow stronger. Community health workers will teach his mother about creating a nutrient-rich diet from limited resources. Treatment will give Anibal a chance to grow healthy and strong.
