Gritlie is a four-year-old girl who lives with her parents and three siblings in Haiti. Her father is a teacher and her mother works at home. Gritlie goes to preschool and enjoys playing with her friends and watching cartoons. Gritlie was born with ventricular septal defect, a cardiac condition in which a hole exists between the two lower chambers of her heart. Blood leaks through this hole without first passing through her lungs to obtain oxygen, leaving her sick and short of breath. Have a Heart Cayman is contributing $17,000 to the cost of Gritlie's heart surgery. And although Watsi has already funded Gritlie's [transportation](https://watsi.org/profile/08e136f72108-gritlie) to the hospital, she is still in need of $1,500 to cover medications, labs, exams, and surgery preparation. "We are all praying that Gritlie's surgery goes well and that she will become healthy afterward," says Gritlie's mother.

Meet Tin, a young 20-year-old woman from Burma. She lives with her husband, mother, and younger brother. Tin works on her family's farm to cultivate rice for subsistence. Tin shares with our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund (BCMF), that about three months ago, she started experiencing sharp pain and discomfort during urination. She also noticed a mass on the left side of her abdomen. Tin has now been diagnosed with an ovarian dermoid cyst. BCMF have arranged for Tin to undergo an oophorectomy (or ovary removal surgery) on August 15. The total cost will come to $913, and this also includes Tin's hospital stay and medication. Tin says, "I hope that my surgery is successful and that I can return to farming afterwards. I hope to spend some more time weaving."

Carlos is a one-month-old baby boy from Guatemala. He lives with his mother and four siblings. Carlos's mother is unable to produce breastmilk and has resorted to feeding him warm sugar water to fill him up. This limited diet is insufficient and has dangerous implications for Carlos's health. Lactation failure can lead to starvation, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalances that cause seizures. Brain development during this period is particularly sensitive and continued malnourishment could put Carlos at risk for long-term damage. Our medical partner, Wuqu' Kawoq, is asking for $1,162 to fund Carlos's treatment. By supplying Carlos with formula and his mother with health education, Carlos will receive the nutrients he needs to grow and thrive. One-on-one education with Carlos’s mother will teach her how to provide a nutritious, inexpensive diet for her son. His mother will also learn to check for signs of malnutrition and other illness. “Thank you for this support that will be given to my nephew. We wish to see our nephew grow so that he can go to school in order to have a better future and become a good person,” his aunt says.

Alexandro's mother says, "I am hopeful for my son's surgery so he will have more energy and strength!"

Gladis will receive formula, micronutrients, and food supplementation, as well as regular growth monitoring. Community health workers will also teach her mother how to create a nutrient rich diet using limited resources. Hopefully Gladis's continued treatment will allow her to gain weight, strengthen her immune system, and catch up with other children her age. Gladis´s mother says, “Thank you for the support we will get. Thank you to the donors for helping children in Guatemala, especially for helping Gladis. With the help of the program, I will see my child grow little by little.”
