Florence is just six days old. She is the firstborn child to two loving parents. Her mother is a tailor and her father sells merchandise in a nearby trading center. The family owns a small piece of land, which they farm for home consumption. Florence has spina bifida, which causes an open mass on her back. Without surgery, Florence is likely to develop an infection, have a tethered spinal cord, and develop scoliosis. Florence's parents earn enough to cover the basic needs for their family but they have been unable to raise funds for Florence’s surgery. “I look forward to seeing my daughter’s back closed. It makes me feel so sad to see it open, and I pray we’ll get the support we need for her surgery,” her mother says. For $980, Florence will receive surgery to close the mass on her back. She will be at much less risk of developing an infection or other conditions caused by spina bifida.

Victoria is a 13-year-old girl from Ghana. She is very energetic and enjoys reading and being with her friends. Victoria’s father is unemployed but has brought her to our institutional partner, the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine (FOCOS) in Ghana, because of his concern for his daughter’s health. Victoria is having trouble standing upright and is beginning to feel significant discomfort due to her scoliosis. Her spine is curved. Her condition has progressed quite rapidly over the past year and is expected to worsen. In order to fix the curve in Victoria’s spine, the doctors will fuse two of her vertebrae using a procedure called a PSF T2-S1. Reginah is a quiet 44-year-old mother from Kenya who is giving everything she has to taking care of her three children since her husband passed away. Unfortunately, Reginah has cervical dysplasia. She needs a total abdominal hysterectomy in order to eliminate the risk of cervical cancer, but because she earns money by doing small chores for her neighbors, she cannot afford the hysterectomy on her own. Reginah's surgery will cost $885. Zin is a 19-year-old girl who was born with a mass on the left side of her stomach. One morning in April, she woke up completely numb on her left side. Unable to move, Zin was confined to her house. She soon started experiencing headaches, heaviness in her legs, and joint pain. For an entire month, Zin relied entirely on her younger sister to take care of her. Zin’s mother had to borrow money from friends for transportation costs to take Zin to an urban clinic where she was diagnosed with a kidney cyst. Zin’s mother is very worried about her daughter's health, and about their growing hospital bills. Zin needs a $1,330 surgery to remove the cyst and restore her quality of life. This smiley guy is Said. Said is an infant from Somalia whose parents hope he will “become a great leader in our country and change it for the better.” Said was born with an open bladder, which puts him at risk for infection and social isolation as he grows up. Said’s parents traveled across the Somali border into Ethiopia to seek treatment for him. Traveling through Somalia is not easy, and they needed donations from friends and family just to cover the transportation costs to get to our partner hospital. For $1,500, we can pay for Said's bladder exstrophy repair surgery and allow him to grow up healthy!

Teresiah is a 27-year-old woman from Kenya. A mother of one, she works in a hair salon while her husband works as a casual laborer. Teresiah has been living with thyroid cancer for the past two years. If left untreated, it will likely cause organ failure, even becoming life threatening. In order to remove the cancer, she will require a thyroidectomy (partial or entire removal of her thyroid). “Right now I am doing fine," Teresiah says, "But the doctors say that a time is coming when I will not be okay. Levis is a toddler who is about to celebrate his third birthday! He lives with his mother and grandparents in Kenya, where his mother works as a casual laborer to support the family. Levis was born with hypospadias, a condition in which the urethra is malformed and makes it impossible for him to pass urine properly. If Levis' condition is left untreated, his doctors worry that he will be at risk for infertility and social isolation when he grows up. Levis' grandmother has sought medical attention for him since his birth. She tells his doctors that it breaks her heart that it has taken this long to find help, and that she is hopeful that her grandson can grow up to live a happy adult life. For $1,200, we can pay for Levis to undergo surgery to repair his malformation and return his reproductive system to working order, allowing him to live a healthy and dignified life.

At just one month old, Angel is fighting for her life. She was born with hydrocephalus, a condition in which spinal fluid builds up in the skull and puts potentially fatal pressure on the brain. She needs a $1,750 surgery to give her a chance at a healthy future. Angel's mother is doing her best to care for her four children, but she is at a loss for how to handle this situation. Angel is unable to close her eyes properly or hold her head up on her own. The team at our medical partner in Zambia writes, "Angel's life will be saved with this procedure. She'll have the chance to develop normally, and as her head decreases in size, she'll be able to become more and more independent, holding her head up on her own and eventually being able to stand and walk."

Andrecia contracted rheumatic fever in 2007 that damaged her aortic and mitral valves. In 2008, she had surgery in Miami to replace the mitral valve, but now she needs surgery to replace the aortic valve. Andrecia is constantly short of breath and fatigued. She is no longer able to do daily activities and her symptoms are getting worse. Since 2010, Andrecia has lived in Port-au-Prince at a home for children, where she volunteers as a mentor and tutor for the younger children. The International Kids Fund is subsidizing Andrecia’s heart surgery, but she needs $1,500 for transportation to the United States. Once the aortic valve is replaced, Andrecia will be able to return to normal activities with few limitations. Without the surgery, Andrecia will likely pass away within several months, or even weeks.
