Meet Dollar, a 30-year-old woman from Burma. Dollar lives with her husband and her three children, ages four, six, and eight. To support their family, Dollar and her husband grow rice and vegetables. When Dollar was 29 years old, she first noticed a fourth degree perineal tear in her groin area, causing her to experience pain when she passes urine. Ever since, her condition has progressively worsened. “Currently, she suffers from fecal incontinence, chronic rectal pain and chronic urinary tract infections, in addition to feeling dizzy and tired often,” explains our medical partner, Burma Border Projects (BBP). “In her search for treatment, Dollar has been forced to borrow money from friends and neighbors to pay the combined costs of medical visits and transportation to health clinics and hospitals,” BBP tells us. “She now has many debts to repay and the treatments she has received have not helped.” Her condition now causes her significant pain and emotional distress. Dollar “worries that she has caused a lot of problems for her family and made her family incur lots of debts,” BBP tells us. “but she cannot afford the expensive surgery needed to fix her condition.” For $1,500, we can fund treatment to repair the perineal tear and relieve Dollar of pain and discomfort. “She will have more energy and will no longer suffer from incontinence or UTIs,” BBP tells us. “Dollar hopes to return to her family so that she can help with house chores and field work and look after her children.”
