This is Abigael. She is only a few days old, and was born in Kenya. She is the youngest of three children.
Abigael was born with spina bifida, a birth defect in which the baby’s spinal cord fails to develop completely. “Abigael is at a risk of developing tethered cord syndrome that can lead to either scoliosis and or kyphosis, and getting perilous infections on the exposed nerves,” says our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). “She may possibly lose muscle function on the lower limbs if not treated.”
Abigael needs a spina bifida closure surgery. This treatment will greatly reduce the risk of serious infection or further complications.
Abigael’s mom is raising her children by herself, and had to travel over 200 miles from her remote home so that Abigael could get treatment in a hospital. Her mom is a subsistence farmer, and cannot afford the $805 needed for Abigael’s surgery. Together, we can help raise the funds and support Abigael.
“I hope my daughter gets well,” Abigael’s mom shares.
