Woobens is a toddler from Haiti. He lives with his parents, who are farmers, and three older siblings in the mountains of Northern Haiti. Woobens has a cardiac condition called patent ductus arteriosus. A hole exists between two major blood vessels near the heart. Woobens also has Down syndrome. On October 9, he will undergo cardiac surgery at St. Damien Hospital, our medical partner's care center. During surgery, Surgeons will use a patch to close the hole near his heart. Another organization, Gift of Life International, is contributing $5,000 to pay for surgery. Woobens's family also needs help to fund the costs of surgery prep. The $1,500 requested by our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, covers cardiac exams and medications. His mother says, "I am hopeful that after this surgery, my son will start growing and gaining weight."

Pheak is a tailor from Cambodia. She has one sister and three brothers. She enjoys listening to music and watching TV in her free time. Fourteen years ago, Pheak had an ear infection. This infection caused the tympanic membrane, or the ear drum, in her left ear to perforate. For this reason, Pheak experiences pain, tinnitus and ear discharge. She cannot hear clearly. Pheak traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On September 6, she will undergo a myringoplasty procedure in her left ear. During this procedure, surgeons will close the perforation. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, is requesting $423 to fund this procedure. This covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care. She says, "I hope my hearing improves and my ear has no more pain after the operation."

Naomi is a child from Tanzania. She is the youngest in a family of three children. Naomi’s parents are both farmers. Naomi has clubfoot of both her feet. Clubfoot is a condition in which the foot is twisted out of shape. This causes difficulty walking and even wearing shoes. Fortunately, Naomi traveled to visit our medical partner's care center, AIC Cure International Hospital. There, surgeons will perform clubfoot repair surgery on October 2. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $890 to fund Naomi's clubfoot repair. After treatment, she will be able to walk easily without pain and discomfort. Naomi’s mother says, “I am really grateful that you have offered to help my daughter. God bless you. Thank you.”

Karamagi is a 70-year-old man from Uganda. He is married and a father of ten children. For two weeks, Karamagi has had a hydrocele, which is a swelling in a sensitive area. This hydrocele causes him discomfort and has affected his work. Fortunately, on October 17, he will undergo hydrocele repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $185 to fund Karamagi's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live more comfortably and confidently. He says, "After surgery I will be happy and resume with my work."

Thy is a corn farmer from Cambodia. She has one son, three daughters, and fourteen grandchildren. She likes to listen to monks pray on the radio. Two years ago, Thy developed a cataract in each eye, causing her blurry vision, headache, tearing, irritation, itchiness, and photophobia. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Thy learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for five hours seeking treatment. On October 17, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in each eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $398 procedure. She says, "I hope I can see well so I can go to the pagoda on my own again."

Kataha is a casual worker from Uganda. He is married and a father of eight children. He washes and irons clothes for a living, while his wife is a farmer. For two years, Kataha has had an inguinal scrotal hernia. If not treated, the hernia may result in intestinal tissue damage and death. Fortunately, on September 5, he will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $219 to fund Kataha's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live more comfortably and confidently. Kataha says, “I hope to be supported by Watsi and I continue with my work for the sake of my family after surgery.”

Serey is a housewife from Cambodia. She has three sons. She likes to spend time with her family and watch TV. Nineteen years ago, she fell off her motorcycle and has experienced hip pain ever since. She cannot walk or work. Fortunately, Serey learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre. At CSC, surgeons can perform a total hip replacement to relieve Serey of her pain and allow her to walk easily. Treatment is scheduled for October 16, and Serey needs help raising $1,025 to pay for this procedure. She says, "I look forward to being able to walk again."

Long is a rice farmer from Cambodia. She has three daughters and four sons. She likes to watch Khmer dramas. Three months, Long developed a cataract in each eye, causing her blurred vision and photophobia. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Long learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for two and a half hours seeking treatment. On October 15, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in each eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $398 procedure. She says, "I hope I can see better so I can take care of my children and I can return to work."

Sovann is a construction worker from Cambodia. He has one son and enjoys helping his wife with working at home. Five months ago, he was in a motor vehicle accident that caused an open fracture in his left leg. He went to an emergency hospital and doctors gave him a bamboo splint to heal his fracture. However, he still experiences pain, swelling, and pus discharge from the open wound. When Sovann learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On August 10, surgeons at CSC will perform a debridement procedure to to remove damaged and infected tissue from the wound. Now, Sovann needs help to fund this $262 procedure. He says, "I hope after the operation, my wound heals and I can move without support from other people."

Alvin is a young student from Kenya. He is in fifth grade. Alvin is the youngest in a family of two. Alvin was diagnosed with cryptorchidism, a condition in which one or both of the testicles remains undescended. If left untreated, Alvin has an increased risk of developing hernias, testicular cancer, and fertility problems in the future. Alvin will be receiving assistance from our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). Fortunately, he is scheduled to undergo corrective surgery on October 11. AMHF is requesting $459 to cover the total cost of his procedure and care. "We were very concerned and worried when he told us about this problem. We pray that he gets help and hope the treatment will be successful so that he can continue with his studies,” Alvin’s mother says.

Meet Richard, a cute, one-year old baby boy from Tanzania. Richard likes to play with cars and crawl around. He is an only child and his parents “love him very much," says our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). Richard was born with bilateral clubfoot. This congenital deformity has delayed his ability to begin walking, and if not treated, Richard will not have the ability to walk on the sole of his foot or wear normal shoes. For $1,160, we can fund treatment that will allow Richard to walk normally for the rest of his life. The cost of the treatment includes cost for the surgery as well as a fiberglass cast. Richard's parents are small-scale farmers and have “already spent a lot of money trying to look for the right treatment for their son without success. Now that they have found where the clubfoot can be corrected, they do not have enough funds to cover the treatment,” says our partner, AMHF. Let's help Richard get walking. As Richard's mother says, “I would like my son to be able to walk, go to school, study well, get a good career and live a better life.”
