Roodolph is a toddler from Haiti. He lives with his parents in a small city in northwestern Haiti. He is their first child. He likes playing with cars and going to church. Roodolph has a cardiac condition called Tetralogy of Fallot. This condition involves several related defects including a hole between two chambers of the heart and a muscular blockage of one of the valves. Roodolph will fly to the United States to receive treatment. On April 17, he will undergo cardiac surgery, during which surgeons will use a patch to close the hole in his heart, and remove the muscular blockage. Another organization, HeartGift Foundation, is contributing $18,000 to pay for surgery. Roodolph's family also needs help to fund the costs of surgery prep. The $1,500 bill covers labs, medicines, and checkup and followup appointments. It also supports passport obtainment and the social workers from our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, who will accompany Roodolph's family overseas. His mother says, "We are very excited for Roodolph to have this surgery so that he can be healthy and active!"

Grace is a farmer from Kenya. She has three children. In 2012, Grace began to experience troubling symptoms. She was diagnosed with a multinodular goiter. She needs surgery to prevent her symptoms from getting worse. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is helping Grace receive treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy on April 15 at our medical partner's care center. Surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. This procedure will cost $625, and she and her family need help raising money. “I have no one to turn to and I have just bene waiting for God’s intervention. I hope Watsi will assist me so that I can be able to live my normal life and continue caring for my children,” says Grace.

Haji is a farmer from Uganda. For seven years, Haji has had an inguinal hernia. Fortunately, on March 20, he will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $249 to fund Haji's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live more comfortably and confidently. Haji says, "After surgery I will be happy because what has been disturbing me will have been removed."

More than five years ago, Kabacubya, a 58-year-old woman from Uganda, started experiencing difficulty passing urine. When she visited a hospital the first time, she was told that she might need surgery. However, Kabacubya could not go back to hospital because she could not afford the surgery. She feels weak and uncomfortable, and for quite some time now, Kabacubya has not been able to work in her gardens - which she fears might result into shortage of food in her home. She has been diagnosed with uterine prolapse. Kabacubya is a widow and a mother of five. Her husband passed away in 2001. At the time of her husband's passing, all her children were in school and she struggled to raise them. Kabacubya's last born is still in school. Kabacubya is worried about her condition, but she cannot afford treatment on top of paying school fees for her youngest and supporting her daughter who is deaf, educated, but cannot find a job. Improved quality of life is what we hope for Kabacubya after a uterine prolapse repair, which costs $280. She will be free from the risk of chronic urinary tract infection. "I will be very grateful if you help me have surgery," shares Kabacubya. After surgery, Kabacubya hopes to regain her strength and resume taking care of her fields so that she can get enough food for her family, and sell some to earn an extra income.

Meet Samuel, a three-month-old baby boy from Tanzania! This past August, Watsi donors funded an operation to treat Samuel's myelomeningocele. After two weeks of physiotherapy, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF), states that Samuel successfully recovered from his surgery. Now, Samuel needs treatment to repair a hernia just below his belly button. AMHF explains that this bulge frequently appears, especially while eating. With $610, Samuel will receive treatment to correct his hernia. To support his recovery, Samuel will also spend one week at Plaster House--a specialized surgical rehabilitation program. This operation will prevent Samuel from developing intestinal obstruction in the future, allowing him to enjoy normal childhood development. “Samuel is doing great, we continue to pray for complete healing so that he can grow up like other children and live an independent life,” said Samuel’s mother.

This is James, a 19-day-old baby boy from Haiti! He has two loving parents with two siblings, who are looking forward to playing with their new brother once he comes home. James was born with a birth defect called an omphalocele, meaning that his intestines are outside his abdomen. Our medical partner, Project Medishare, explains, “The disease causes the baby to become underweight, as he is not fed well. He has severe abdominal pains and an infection of his navel.” With James' life-threatening symptoms, he will not be able to return to home unless his condition is surgically repaired. Both of James parents are currently unemployed. His father works as a laborer and his mother takes care of their children and prepares food. They are not able to afford treatment for James. For $1,500, we can pay for a surgical intervention to correct James' omphalocele and make sure he heals correctly with antibiotics. “I just wish to see my baby healthy and okay to come home to join our family," says James' mom.
