"We hope that our daughter will one day be able to walk properly like other children. Having straight legs will allow her to walk to school and be able to run and compete with other children in sports," says Nasau's parents. Meet Nasau, a friendly six-year-old girl from Tanzania. She likes coloring pictures and playing with lego blocks and cards. Nasau has been diagnosed with bilateral genu valgus, a severe deformity of the limbs. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundations tells us, “Nasau cannot walk without knocking her knees, and that causes her to walk slow. If left untreated, she will most likely develop early osteoarthritis." With two other children to care for, Nasau's parents badly want to help her, but they cannot afford the cost of surgery. Until her legs are operated on, their daughter is unable to attend school. For $940, we can fund the treatment to correct Nasau’s lower limbs.

Glendy is a toddler who lives in Guatemala with her family. She is the third of four children and, while born healthy, has not exhibited developmental growth after her first year of life. She has what is called stunting, the most common form of child malnutrition in the world. "She was a normal baby until about one year of age, and then financial pressures in the family started to take their toll," writes our medical partner, Wuqu' Kawoq (WK), about Glendy. "In particular, a younger baby was born, and Glendy had less access to foods, mom's milk, and so forth. She is frequently and chronically ill with diarrhea. Her diet is poor, especially lacking in vitamins and protein. She has limited energy and very delayed language." But treatment for Glendy's stunting, especially the personalized treatment like the WK team has been able to give other children, will help to get her back on track. With $535, we can curb the diarrhea Glendy has been having, improve her appetite and energy, and help her get over this developmental slump. Glendy's mom is especially optimistic. Florence is a lively two-year-old boy from Tanzania who loves to grab everything he sets his eyes on. His mother was a storekeeper at a wholesale store, but after giving birth to Florence she quit her job to give him the extra care he needs. Florence's father is a self-employed electrician who works diligently every day to support his wife and son. As you can see in the photo, Florence has a nasal encephalocele, which is a growing mass on his nose. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation reports that “if not treated, the mass may block his air passageway or it may burst. This could cause numerous severe health problems.” Although Florence’s father is working hard to provide for his family, he needs our help to give Florence the help he needs. “My son is growing well," Florence's mom says, "but the mass between his eyes worries me because it keeps growing bigger. He is our only boy and we would like for him to grow up like other children and later on be able to go to school and become independent.” For $850, Florence will receive grafting and a nasal bridge reconstruction, which will reduce the risk his mass will burst, improve his appearance, and ensure he can continue to breath safely. Luckenson is a six-year-old boy from Haiti. He is one of four children and his single mother supports the family by working as a housekeeper. Luckenson is very malnourished and has problems getting sufficient nourishment. He is six but weighs only ten pounds. His mother is sometimes unable to work because she needs to take care of him. For $900, we can fund a surgery that will consist of putting a tube in his stomach, allowing him to eat and get nourishment properly. Luckenson will be able to grow and to feed, so he can properly develop and have a healthy life!

This is baby Nathanaelle, is a sweet one-year-old girl who lives with her family in Haiti. Nathanaelle was born with cleft lip and cannot feed normally. Her mother says she cries a lot, has dry coughs, and sometimes fever and the flu. Nathanaelle cannot drink breast milk because of her lip deformation. “I was very worried and stressed when my baby was born,” Nathanaelle's mother says. “I was thinking that her lip would get bigger as she grows up, but then I was referred to the hospital and I told that it could be fixed. I am hopeful now and I am waiting for the surgery.” For $960, we can give Nathanaelle the plastic surgery she needs to begin feeding normally! Veronica is an adorable 10-day-old baby living in Tanzania. Veronica was the first child of her newlywed parents. But three months before her birth, her father passed away. Now, Veronica is facing a new challenge. She has a lesion on her back that is leaking cerebral spinal fluid. Her mother is a casual laborer who mostly does farm work. She is working hard to take care of Veronica on her own, and says, “Please help my baby get well. She is all I’ve got.” $1025 will pay for a myelomeningocele closure and ventriculoperitoneal shunt insertion, a surgery that will save Veronica’s life. Meet Hugo, a two-year-old boy from Guatemala! Hugo was born with birth complications that resulted in improper brain development. In addition to his developmental delays, Hugo is malnourished. His mother has been overwhelmed with his healthcare needs and has not been able to provide him with proper nutrition. She cares for Hugo with all of her heart, but since she has not had a medical advocate through this process, she has felt lost in Guatemala's system. Our medical partners at Wuqu’ Kawoq are determined to work with Hugo and his mother to make sure they receive proper healthcare. Sweet three-month-old Paulo was born without the ability to pass stool. Just after he was born, he was diagnosed with Hirschsprung’s disease, a condition that affects the nerves in the large intestines and causes intestinal blockages. Because of the urgent nature of his condition, Paulo was given a colostomy, an alternative waste disposal opening located in his abdomen. In order to live a normal life, Paulo needs surgery to remove the affected intestines and create a normal passage to replace the preliminary colostomy. Paulo’s parents are very poor and cannot pay for his treatment. “Although we don't have much, our prayer is for our son to survive and live a normal life,” they told our medical partner.
