“Dipa lives with her son and daughter-in-law who tend to the farm to keep the family going,” says our medical partner, Possible. After a bad fall, the 65-year-old woman from Nepal was recently accompanied by her grandson to Possible’s clinic. “Dipa fell off the stairs in her house and ended up fracturing her left wrist,” Possible tells us. “She has been in pain since and the area of injury has swollen too.” $579 covers the cost of Dipa’s orthopedic surgery to treat her wrist fracture. Dipa will receive an open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) operation to reset her broken bones and place them into position using metal rods and screws. This two-step procedure will allow her bones to heal in their normal position without complications. Following surgery, Dipa will remain in the hospital for an additional four days, where she will receive several sessions of physiotherapy. “Joints hurt in old age anyway and now I have a fracture," Dipa shares. "I just want to go back home and rest."

Seven-year-old Jonenskia was born with a cardiac condition called ventricular septal defect, in which a hole exists between the two lower chambers of her heart. “Blood flows through the hole in her heart without first passing through the lungs to get oxygen, leaving her sickly and short of breath,” says our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance (HCA). “Because she has lived for so long with this condition, there is a chance it may no longer be repairable, but the only way to determine this is by inserting a catheter into the chambers of her heart. Since this is not possible in Haiti, arrangements are being made to bring her to Dominican Republic to perform this extremely important test in the hopes that she can have heart surgery later in the year.” Jonenskia lives in Port-au-Prince with her mother, father, and three sisters. Her father works in construction and her mother stays home with the children. She is in primary school and likes going to school and playing with her friends. "We are praying to God that Jonenskia can have an operation so that we don't have to worry about her heart anymore,” her mother says. With $1,500 we can fully fund Jonenskia’s travel, transportation, and diagnostic procedure to help move her treatment forward.

Meet Morris, a 27-year-old man from Kenya and the eldest of three children. He is a trained tailor but has had a difficult time working since his accident earlier this year. While riding on a motorbike, Morris was hit from behind by a car that lost control. He has been diagnosed with a right tibia fracture and ostreomyelitis (infection in the bone) and can no longer walk without support. “Morris has had more than four operations since the accident,” explains our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation. “His parents, who are farmers, ended up selling their land and cattle when Morris’ medical bills became too much for the family.” For $1,500, we can fund the bone transport necessary to repair Morris' damaged tissue and get him back on his feet again. Without treatment, he might end up needing an amputation due to severe infection. “I have watched as my parents sold everything they had so that I can walk again. I want to be able to walk and work again so that I can help my family,” Morris tells us. Together, we can make this dream a reality.
