If left untreated, this condition can lead to brain damage, a loss of mental and physical abilities, and even death. David is the first born of a young mother who still lives with and is supported her family. The family does not have the means to afford the treatment David needs. Meet Losieku! He is a nine-year-old boy living in Tanzania. The youngest of three children, he is happy, likes playing with others, and wishes “to one day go to school.” Losieku also has chronic osteomyelitis, a bone infection caused by bacteria and other germs. As a result, Losieku's femur is weak and at risk of a pathological fracture. Losieku's mother sells vegetables in an open market but does not earn enough to cover both their basic needs and her son’s treatment. His father is a businessman who travels for long periods of time but does not contribute much at home to help raise his family. For $700, Losieku can have surgery to reduce the bone infection and improve healing of the femoral defect.
