Blet is a 30-year-old woman from Burma who works as a farmer in order to support her elderly parents, daughter, niece, and nephew. In early June, Blet was hit in the nape of her neck by a tight bunch of bamboo as she was trying to pull the bunch apart. While she resumed working, Blet noticed dizziness and pain three days later when she was eating a snack. She hoped that the discomfort would get better on its own, but, six days later, her pain intensified to the point where she now feels as though her head might explode. Breathing is difficult, her left leg and hand tremble and ache, walking is slow and tough, and her right eye is swollen shut. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, is requesting $414 to fund a CT scan for Blet in order to properly diagnose her condition. The scan is scheduled for July 4 and, once completed, will hopefully provide Blet with clarity regarding her current symptoms.

Reach is a farmer from Cambodia. He likes to play soccer and look after his family's rice field. In February 2017, Reach broke his arm in a motorbike crash near his house. He is in chronic pain and isn't able to do daily activities. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, can help. On November 20, Reach will undergo a fracture repair procedure, which will cost $430. This procedure will improve function in his arm. He says, "I want to fix my arm and go back to work."

Roth is a 26-year-old married farmer. In his free time, he likes to relax and listen to music. In February 2014, Roth was in a motor vehicle accident that caused fractures in his left femur and tibia. He was treated in a hospital in Phnom Penh. Roth visited our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), in June 2016. His symptoms included muscle wasting, wound infection, left knee stiffness, and a limited range of movement in his ankle. He was unable to walk. On June 25, 2016, CSC surgeons performed several surgeries to heal his fractures and infection. Roth returned to CSC for three follow-up appointments. Recently, Roth returned to CSC because he was experiencing pain and had difficulty walking. On November 28, CSC surgeons performed reconstructive surgery to fix his damaged bones and repair his fracture. This procedure will allow Roth to walk easily again. Now, he needs help to fund this $411 procedure. "I really hope that I can walk better again and without pain," he says.

Meet Maylin, a 21-month-old baby girl from Guatemala. Our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq (WK), tells us, “Maylin has two older sisters. Her mother works cleaning houses, and her father is a day worker doing construction in a town nearby. Unfortunately this type of work is inconsistent and pays poorly. As a result he struggles to earn enough money to support his family. Maylin loves to play with her sister Diana. Together, they use the cups and plates around the house to have little tea parties with their dolls. They both spend almost all of their time at home.” Maylin was diagnosed with acute malnutrition. “Maylin is below the average height and the average weight for her age,” WK reports, ”She currently is not consuming enough calories and enough quality foods. As a result her physical growth is stunted, and we worry her mental growth will be stunted as well.” As a result of food insecurity and marginalization, indigenous Guatemalan villages have the highest rates of stunting in the world. In addition to growth stunting, malnutrition can lead to lower IQ, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. $512 will fund the treatment Maylin needs to address her nutritional deficit and improve her low energy and subsequent limited mental potential. This involves micronutrient and food supplementation, deworming medication to rid Maylin of a parasitic infection, and nutrition education for her parents. With these combined efforts, Maylin will recoup her weight and height and strengthen her immune system, laying the foundation for a healthier future. “I just want a healthy baby,” shares Maylin’s mother.

Padam Raj is a 36-year-old social worker from Nepal who is passionate about education. He teaches in a local temple and hopes to give his children the best education he possibly can. Padam has been living with a painful hemorrhoid for over a month, which could become worse and lead to serious complications if left untreated. For $965, we can give Padam the surgery he needs to get well. With your help, Padam can continue his teaching and social work, and provide the education he has dreamed of for his four children!

Mathayo is a happy one-year-old baby boy from Tanzania. Mathayo has hydrocephalus, a condition that causes an abnormal buildup of fluids in the brain. The fluid buildup causes increased pressure in the skull, leading to problems with Mathayo's eyesight. He is also unable to hold up his own head, and subsequently hasn't begun to sit or crawl without assistance. His father is a businessman but is struggling to support his family with Matheyo's additional medical expenses. Matheyo's mother is forced to stay at home and take care of Matheyo due to his condition. Matheyo's mother says, "I love my son very much. I pray to God that he will be able to sit, walk and grow like the rest of my children.” For $850 we can fund Matheyo's ventriculoperitoneal shunt insertion. The procedure will help relieve the pressure buildup in Matheyo's brain and hopefully allow him to resume healthy visual and motor development!

Meet Sambath, a 43-year-old man from Cambodia. He works as a pig farmer to support his three children. Eight months ago, Sambath had a motorbike accident, and broke his arm. Because he did not have the money to pay for treatment, Sambath hoped the bone would heal on its own. It has not, and mobility in his arm and hand is becoming increasingly difficult. His daily activities are limited now, and he is in a lot of pain. Sambath needs surgery to repair his arm. For $300, he will receive surgery so that he can return to his normal life, pain-free.

Ashok is a lively and courageous 15-year-old who aspires to be a teacher. He is currently in the ninth grade, studying diligently to have a bright future. Ashok’s parents work at a poultry farm to earn money for food and other necessities. Five years ago, Ashok fractured his left hand. The injury is now on its way to turning into a permanent deformity. As a result, Ashok is unable to perform some of the household activities he used to be able to do. For $1,225, we can fund Ashok’s surgery so he can be able to use his left hand again and pursue his dream of becoming a teacher!

Zin is a 19-year-old girl who was born with a mass on the left side of her stomach. One morning in April, she woke up completely numb on her left side. Unable to move, Zin was confined to her house. She soon started experiencing headaches, heaviness in her legs, and joint pain. For an entire month, Zin relied entirely on her younger sister to take care of her. Zin’s mother had to borrow money from friends for transportation costs to take Zin to an urban clinic where she was diagnosed with a kidney cyst. Zin’s mother is very worried about her daughter's health, and about their growing hospital bills. Zin needs a $1,330 surgery to remove the cyst and restore her quality of life. Daw Su is a 50-year-old teacher form Burma. For three years, Daw Su has struggled with abdominal pain and bleeding caused by a uterine mass. Daw Su's condition is extremely treatable with surgery. But Daw Su’s husband recently contracted malaria, and was forced to give up his job, leaving the family in a financially strained position. Despite support from friends, family, and students, Daw Su needs additional help to afford treatment. Nalit is a seven-year-old from Tanzania who works at a supermarket as a storekeeper to help her parents cover the cost of her school fees. She doesn't earn quite enough to cover both her tuition and her everyday needs, but she says she, “would like to finish my primary education and continue with secondary school!” Nalit is the youngest kid in her family and the only girl out of four children. Aside from the financial strain, going to school is made even more difficult for her because of pain in her knee caused by chronic osteomyelitis, a bone infection that is weakening and slowly eating her right femur bone away. For $700, we can help pay for a sequestrectomy, a procedure that removes the fragment of infected bone from the healthy bone, plus antibiotic beads which will reduce infection and improve healing of the femur.
