Wai is an 18-year-old woman from Burma. For the past seven months, she has lived in Thailand crafting jewelry to be sold in Bangkok. About five months ago, Wai began experiencing pain in her abdomen and back. She is very worried about her condition. She has been diagnosed with fibroids, which are benign growths in the uterus. She needs to undergo a myomectomy, a procedure in which surgeons will remove the fibroids. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund (BCMF), is requesting $960 to fund Wai's surgery. She is scheduled to undergo her myomectomy on November 14 at BCMF's care center, Mae Sot General Hospital. Wai says, "I am constantly worried about my family. A while ago, I had to resign from my work as I could not request leave from work whenever I am in pain."

Sein is 21 years old and lives with her family in Burma. About a month ago, Sein started to experience abdominal pain, back pain, loss of appetite, and headaches. Over time, her symptoms have worsened and she is now unable to walk long distances or sleep well. Sein was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst and informed that she needed an oophorectomy, the surgical removal of her ovary. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, is requesting $913 to cover the cost of her procedure, which is scheduled for July 6. Sein said, "In the future, I hope to work and fulfill my dream of becoming involved in charity work that helps other people get financial support for healthcare."

“Mamita is a keen student,” shares her mother. Mamita, a 13-year-old girl from Nepal, lives with her mother, one older sister, and one younger sister. While she enjoys school, Mamita has recently stopped attending due to a broken arm. “Mamita was walking down the stairs with her clothes, towel, and shampoo to go bathe in the river when she slipped and fell down,” says our medical partner, Possible. “The accident caused her to fracture her left arm. She has been in a lot of pain since and the area of injury has swollen, looks tender, and is slightly deformed.” In addition to her studies, Mamita looks after the cattle on her family’s farm and watches her younger sister. “Her father works in India to support the family back home while her mother tends to the farm to keep the family going,” says Possible. Mamita’s tasks at home are made difficult by her fractured arm, and she requires surgery to correct the injury. For $579, Mamita will undergo surgery to align the fractured bones and secure them with pins to ensure that they heal properly. After her procedure, Mamita can return to school and to her duties at home without the pain and swelling that have been holding her back. “I wish for her treatment to happen early so that she can return home, to school and to a normal life again,” says Mamita’s mother.

Meet Muy, a 52-year-old woman from Cambodia. “Muy is married with three sons, one daughter, and 13 grandchildren. Muy enjoys watching Khmer movies and social news programs on TV," shares our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC). 10 years ago, Muy developed a pterygium in each eye. A pterygium occurs when a growth starts on the clear tissue of the eye and spreads to the cornea. "This causes her to have blurred vision and experience tearing, irritation, and burning," CSC explains. After learning about CSC, Muy and her sister travelled two hours to visit their clinic. They learned that a simple surgical procedure can restore Muy’s sight. With $150, Muy will undergo an excision surgery. CSC shares that after surgery, “The burning, pain, and irritation will be relieved. Her eyes will look much better after the operation. The redness and tearing will also stop."
