Ratha is a rice farmer from Cambodia. He has two daughters. He likes to play football, listen to music, and watch action movies. Two months ago, he had a tree logging accident and injured his foot. It is difficult for him to walk, and he is in pain. When Ratha learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for two and a half hours seeking treatment. On February 5, surgeons at CSC will perform a skin graft procedure to to heal his wound and allow him to walk painlessly again. Now, Ratha needs help to fund this $440 procedure. He says, "After this operation, I hope I can walk normally again and without pain, so that I can complete my work and support my family."

Vitalina is a 47-year-old widow who lives with one of her granddaughters in rural Guatemala. Years ago, Vitalina sustained an accident in which she fell into a steep ravine. She severely injured her leg, and it had to be amputated. Since then, Vitalina's life has changed drastically—she can no longer work, and completing everyday tasks is a challenge. Since she is unable to work, she is dependent upon her eldest son. Without a steady source of income, Vitalina cannot cover the cost of a prosthetic leg. Receiving a prosthetic leg will change Vitalina's life. She hopes that receiving a prosthetic will allow her to find a job so that she can support herself and her granddaughter. On August 9, Vitalina will be fitted for a prosthetic leg. Now she is requesting financial support to cover her $1,166 treatment costs. "I am grateful to enter this program and receive a prosthetic leg. I will work very hard doing my physical therapies so that I can do more things," shares Vitalina.

Karwemera is a 68-year-old married man from Uganda. He and his wife have 11 children and work as small-scale farmers in order to pay for school fees and family necessities. The recent drought has unfortunately affected crop yields and has placed financial strain upon Karwemera's family. For a long period of time, Karwemera has had an occasional swelling in his right inguinal region that was recently diagnosed as an inguinal hernia. Hernia repair surgery is needed in order to reduce Karwemera's pain and minimize the risk of an obstructed hernia developing. In the case of such a life-threatening hernia, the blood supply to Karwemera's intestines and surrounding tissues could be completely cut off. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $219 to cover the cost of Karwemera's surgery. The procedure is scheduled to take place on June 27 and, once completed, will hopefully relieve Karwemera of his symptoms and of the danger of his condition worsening. “Thank you very much for helping me because I could not afford to pay for the surgery. I hope to continue farming after surgery," says Karwemera

Meet Gina, a 37-year-old mother from Haiti. Our medical partner, Project Medishare, tells us, “Gina is a hardworking woman living in the Haitian countryside; she has four kids and is the family caretaker.” Gina was recently diagnosed with breast cancer after noticing a painful lump on her breast. She began treatment, but after three months was forced to discontinue her care because of the cost. Normally, she earns money to support her family by reselling goods in the countryside. But due to her illness, she’s had to stop work, creating a very difficult situation for her family. Gina needs surgical intervention and further chemotherapy to treat her cancer; otherwise, she may lose her life. “I am excited to receive and finish the treatment and I wish to find a good job to help my children,” she says.
