This little guy is Ayubu, a three-week-old baby boy from Tanzania. The youngest of three children, Ayubu lives with her siblings and hardworking parents. Ayubu’s family owns a few livestock, with which they earn an income to support their family. Ayubu has thoracolumbar myelomeningocele with hydrocephalus. This has caused a lesion on his back, which can burst at anytime and leak cerebral spinal fluid. He is in danger of losing his vision due to increased intracranial pressure and if not treated, his condition will likely be fatal. For $1,025, Ayubu will receive a myelomeningocele closure and ventriculoperitoneal shunt insertion. This treatment will get him out of danger of losing his sight and will allow him to continue developing normally. “We have truly struggled with this baby and we frantically need help. Meet Chhai Den, a 23-year-old man who works as a translator for Habitat for Humanity in Cambodia. In addition to this charity work, Chhai Den is also pursuing a degree in International Business at a university. Chhai Den's doctor says, "Chhai Den was born with a meningoencephalocele, a defect caused by failure of the neural tube to close completely during fetal development. The only treatment for this condition is surgery. Chhai also complains the mass is disturbing to his field of vision." Meet Soinize, a 50-year-old woman from Haiti who has a type of cancer in her eye known as squamous cell carcinoma. Because of this she has clouded retinas, partial loss of vision, and severe irritation. Soinize is in so much pain that she is often unable to sleep at night. Soinize's husband passed away, so she cares for her four children and pays for their schooling by herself. She washes clothes for her neighbors and sells goods on the street to earn some money, but it’s not enough to support her family and pay for her own medical treatment. To get the appropriate treatment for her cancer, Soinize will need to spend six weeks at a hospital in the Dominican Republic. She needs surgical intervention, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Benjamin is a 58-year-old man from Kenya. He is married, and the father of eight grown children. Benjamin works as a carpenter, and all of his children do whatever work they can find. The family works hard, but struggles to earn a sustainable living. Last month, Benjamin fell from the roof of a home and broke his thigh bone. He is in extreme pain, and is unable to walk or stand, let alone work. Benjamin needs surgery to repair the break in his femur. Without treatment, the pain will continue, and the broken bone could cause damage to the surrounding tissues and cartilage in his thigh. There is also the risk that the bone could become infected, which could lead to amputation.
