Hai is a 48-year-old soldier in the Cambodian military who lives with his wife and two sons. During the summer, Hai was involved in a motorcycle accident in which he sustained a fractured patella.
The patella, more commonly known as the kneecap, is a small, movable bone at the front of the knee. It acts as a shield for the knee joint and connects muscles from the thigh to the lower leg. Falls or injuries involving direct impact to the kneecap are common causes of patellar fractures.
After six months of traditional medical treatment did not help his condition, Hai came to our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC). Doctors at CSC will perform a surgical procedure known as open reduction and internal fixation to reposition and set Hai’s broken patella so that it can heal properly.
$405 covers the cost of surgery, a two-week hospital stay, five days of post-operative care (including physiotherapy), and six follow-up appointments during the first year after surgery.
After surgery, “Hai's left patella fracture will heal, and he will be able to walk without pain,” says CSC.
"I hope after surgery, I can walk well with no pain, and I can go to work to support my family,” shares Hai.
