This is Ma Nay, a 43-year-old woman who lives in Burma. "Ma Nay has worked on the farm since she was a young girl," our medical partner, Burma Border Projects, writes. "But now she has health problems and she cannot work like before." Ma Nay has had a uterine mass since she was 34. In the last month, however, the pain in her stomach and her uterus has been greater. In addition, Ma Nay has also experienced constipation and has had difficulty urinating. "She experiences back pain when she sits for long periods of time," BBP writes. "The mass is so large that she can feel its hardness from the outside of her clothes." Doctors have recommended a surgical procedure to address the mass and relieve Ma Nay's pain. The procedure, including hospitalization, medication, and outpatient care, will cost $1500.

Meet Eda, a 32-year-old mother of six with her seventh child on the way. She speaks Mayan Ki'chee' and lives in central Guatemala with her family. Now in the homestretch of her pregnancy, Eda has suddenly begun to experience severe headaches, swelling in her legs, and blurry vision. Her blood pressure is also steadily rising. Our medical partner, Wuqu' Kawoq (WK), tells us that these are signs of preeclampsia. Without care, Eda is susceptible to serious complications, including seizures, for the duration of her pregnancy. "She's never had trouble with preeclampsia before, and all of her other pregnancies have been uncomplicated," the WK teams says of Eda. "For these reasons, she is quite frightened about what might be going on, and she's come to us for help. She and her family have limited financial resources, and they can't afford to pay for medications or hospital appointments." With $310, we'll be able to cover Eda's care and help WK to manage her health during this important time.

Meet Barnabas! He is an active 11-year-old boy from a family of six children that loves to attend school! His favorite subjects are reading and mathematics. Barnabas’ family works hard to ensure that he can attend school; his father is a plumber and his mother is cook at a small café within their hometown in Tanzania. Barnabas says, “I enjoy watching soccer games and I wish that one day I can become a professional soccer player.” Before this guy can get out on the soccer field, he needs our support! Barnabas was born with a club foot. His doctors say “he is at high risk of developing early osteoarthritis of the small bones if not treated.” Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, explains, that with the little income his family makes, “they cannot afford to pay the medical cost for their son’s corrective surgery.” For $1,160, Barnabas can receive corrective surgery to allow him to walk faster and decrease his chances of developing osteoarthritis. Daw Yaung developed a uterine mass 10 years ago. She has not received any traditional medical attention and our medical partners tell us, “she now experiences chest pain and abdomen pain, especially after eating.” Daw Yaung’s symptoms also include fatigue and heart palpitations. Due to her condition, Daw Yaung is unable to do her daily chores or enjoy many of the activities she once loved. Daw Yaung is a 49-year-old woman who lives with her husband, one of her daughters, and her three grandsons in Burma. She loves taking care of her grandsons and being involved with village ceremonies and religious activities. Daw Yaung and her family are farmers, and they depend on a limited and unsteady income produced by the farm. For $1,500, Watsi can help fund surgery to treat Daw Yaung’s uterine mass. With this surgery, Daw Yaung will no longer experience chest or abdomen pain. Treatment will allow her to return to a normal, healthy life doing her favorite activities. “In particular she wants to celebrate her [grandsons'] ordinations when they become novice monks,” share our medical partners at Burma Border Projects. Meet Angela! This newborn baby girl and her twin brother were born in Guatemala. Angela and her brother were born several months early and spent their first few months in intensive care at a local hospital. Angela’s time away from her mother prevented the development of a breastfeeding routine, and Angela’s health has suffered as result. Angela is only able to eat dilute cereal and sugared water, an unhealthy diet which has caused her to be underweight and developmentally delayed. The financial burden of feeding two babies lead Angela’s father to abandon the family leaving her mother to care for the young twins on her own. Angela’s mother tells the staff at Wuqu’ Kawoq she “feels all alone, and not sure where to turn to.” Fortunately, Wuqu’ Kawoq has a program especially for children like Angela, and for $1,220 we can make sure Angela can afford the nutritional therapy she needs to get back on track with her development.
