Chanthorn is a rice farmer from Cambodia. She has one daughter and one son. She likes to listen to the radio and spend time with her family. Ten years ago, Chanthorn had an ear infection. This infection caused the tympanic membrane, or the ear drum, in her left ear to perforate. For this reason, Chanthorn experiences pain and tinnitus. She cannot hear well and is in chronic pain. Chanthorn traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On July 6, she will undergo a myringoplasty procedure in her left ear. During this procedure, surgeons will close the perforation. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, is requesting $423 to fund this procedure. This covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care. Her sister says, "I hope my sister's ear problems are gone after surgery. We look forward to bringing her home with improved hearing."

Sabastian is a teenager from Kenya. He lives with his family in a two-room house in Nairobi. In mid-2016, Sabastian developed lower abdominal pain and bowel complications. He is in constant pain, and medication has not helped. This has left him unable to attend school. Fortunately, the family visited our medical partner's care center, where the doctor recommended that Sabastian undergo a colostomy to improve his bowel function. Surgery is scheduled for August 2 and will cost $564. “I want to be a pilot engineer when I grow up,” shares Sabastian.

Thean is a grandfather from Cambodia. He is a rice farmer. He has two daughters, five sons, and eight grandchildren. He likes to listen to the news on the radio. Two years ago, Thean developed a pterygium in both eyes, causing him irritation, tearing, and blurred vision. Pterygiums are non-cancerous growths of the conjunctiva, a mucous layer that lubricates the eye. The growths occur when the conjunctiva is exposed to excessive sun damage and the cells grow abnormally over the pupil. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, working, and going anywhere outside. When Thean learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for three and a half hours seeking treatment. Thean needs a surgical procedure to remove the abnormal conjunctiva from the cornea surface and replace it with a conjunctival graft to prevent recurrence. The total cost of his procedure is $201. This covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care for two days. The procedure is scheduled for July 4. He says, "I hope after surgery my vision is improved and I can go outside by myself again."
