Meet 33-year-old Wilson, a married man living in Kenya and a father of two young children. “Wilson used to earn for his family by riding a taxi motorbike” while his wife cares for the children, shares our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). Earlier this year, Wilson fractured his left femur when he was hit by a car while riding his motorbike. “Wilson was taken to the nearest hospital, where he was put on skin traction" and received a plaster cast. This treatment failed to heal his fracture, and "if not operated, Wilson may never be able to use his leg," AMHF adds. Wilson is the sole financial supporter of his family, and his injury prevents him from working. “Wilson’s family is depending on friends and family members for their basic needs, and are therefore unable to raise the money required for this important treatment.” For $1,125, Wilson will receive an open reduction and internal fixation surgery. In this two-part surgery, the bone is first put back in place and then is fixed with an internal device. AMHF expects that Wilson’s leg will heal well after the procedure and he will be able to walk again. “It has been five months of pain and struggle," Wilson shares. "May God help me to see my leg healed and being able to walk again. I pray that soon I will go back to work and support my family.”

Meet Benedict, a seven year-old boy from Kenya. Benedict is currently in first grade and his favorite subject is science. Benedict was born with a condition called distal hypospadias. His doctor explains, “Benedict was set to undergo circumcision when doctors realized he had a low lying urethral opening. Benedict was born with an abnormally placed urination hole. As a result, he cannot pass urine normally. If not treated, Benedict is at risk of urinary tract infections and infertility in future.” For $665, we can fund a treatment that will repair Benedict’s urinary tract. “We expect after treatment, Benedict will recover fully. He will be able to pass urine normally and he will be no longer at risk of urinary tract infections or infertility in the future,” shares his doctor. Benedict looks forward to growing up healthy after surgery. “I want to build and own houses when I am older," he says.

“We really hope that something can be done to help Joseph walk properly again," Joseph's parents tell us. "His condition is affecting him psychologically, and lately, he has been avoiding going out to play with his friends. We want him to be able to continue with his education.” Meet Joseph, a quiet 13-year-old boy from Tanzania who has bilateral genus varus, or knocked knees. He used to love running and playing soccer, but now he involves himself more with indoor activities. “At first, he could walk without feeling any pain. Now, he often complains of pain in his knees,” explains our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation. Because walking long distances is difficult, Joseph’s parents had to move him to a nearby school. However, he only has two more years to complete his primary education. After that, they are worried, as there are no secondary schools close by for him to attend. For only $940, we can pay for the surgery necessary to straighten Joseph’s lower limbs. Without our help, his parents, who are small-scale farmers with seasonal income, will not be able to cover the cost of corrective surgery. Let’s work together to ensure Joseph can go to school!

According to his doctors at our medical partner in Ethiopia, six-month-old Ali is a joyful little boy. However Ali’s life is far from easy. He was born with a rare and complicated congenital condition wherein the bladder develops partially outside of the body. As a result, urine leaks directly into Ali’s kidneys and he has a large wound that causes him constant pain. Ali’s mother traveled from neighboring Somalia in the hopes that our medical partner could help Ali, but after the expense of the journey she cannot afford the treatment Ali needs. "Ali is a happy and playful child” she said. “And I believe that once he is treated he will grow up to be a great man in future." With your help, Ali will receive the specialized care he needs to grow up healthy and happy.

Reaksa is a one-year-old toddler who loves to play with toy cars. He has one older sister and lives with his parents in Cambodia. Reaksa was born with fused fingers and toes, four fingers on his left hand and three toes on his right foot. Reconstruction surgery will restore Reaksa's ability to use his hands and feet without any impediment and will make his daily life much easier as he grows older.
